when weight matters (when doesn't it?), still like rocking a big knife to do the splitting (and a small saw to do the cutting)

I have a Fiskars hatchet and axe and think they are great quality for the money but I usually carry a Bahco Laplander folding saw and an ESEE 6 knife in the backcountry as they are both lighter and much more efficient for cutting and then splitting wood up to 4 inches thick. That combo is much more efficient for me than a hatchet. The only thing I can't do is hammer in tent stakes.

I have both the gerber and fiskars hatchets, good value and functional. Fiskars has better steel.

Also have GB outdoorsman hatchet and small forest axe. Worth every penny. The small outdoors hatchet will out produce the gerbers IMO. By far. Liked out 7 trees last week with forest axe and it was a joy.

Only carrried a few times on hunts, more apt to carry a silky.
