Hi all. I'll be doing my first solo elk hunting trip next month. I've read a lot of books that have helped me prepare for the trip but now I'm looking for some books to pass the time during the slower afternoons and in the evening. I'm a terrible day napper and books help me fall asleep at night so I'm looking to bring a few with me.

I'm into old time western hunting and ranching stories, and stories about some of the original conservationists like John Muir and Teddy Roosevelt. If anybody has any book recommendations I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks for the help.

J.F. Coopers leatherstocking series is pretty good. I am reading them right now in time frame order which is different that the order they were written in, 5 books total.

The Frontiersmen by Allan w Eckert.
It’s about the Ohio valley expansion. A lot of Simon Kenton, Simon Girty, Tecumsuha.

That dark and Bloody River. By Allan W Eckert

also about the Ohio valley.

they are both pretty big books though may not be the bestfor a backpack hunt.

The Frontiersman. By Meredith Mason Brown

It’s about Daniel Boone

White Devil by Stephen Brumwell

it’s about Robert Rogers and his rangers

All history type books. Sorry , that’s the way I usually gravitate.

A Life Wild And Perilous by Robert Utley is a great read.

The Joe Pickett series by CJ Box is always a good backcountry read as well.
