A lot of guys carry a backup handgun, especially hunting, or traveling in bear country. If you carry a backup handgun what do you tend to carry? What gun, what caliber and how do you carry it? I opt for a .44 magnum or a .454 Casull, both carried in a chest holster.

I run a .44 but am considering buying a 10mm. I try to keep it as accessible as possible, but usually get tired of it getting in the way and it ends up in my pack.

Ruger Alaskan 454 Casull in a Blackhawk holster on my pack belt.

My .454 is the Ruger Toklat. Some say it is a version of the Alaskan, some may have had "Alaskan" etched on the side.

I have a Glock 20 (10mm) but after doing some reading/research I think i'll end up carrying my Glock 19 (9mm) instead. I don't live/hunt in Grizzly country though.

FNX-45 tactical running 45 super in a Kenai chest harness. Someday I might get it upgraded to run 460 rowland, but 45 super is pretty stiff. I wanted a 10mm but I couldn't find one that fit my hand, besides 45 acp is cheaper to practice with.

4-3/4" Ruger SBH .44 loaded warm with 310gn hard cast in an Alaris Tactical, Kodiak chest holster when I'm in big bear country.
S&W 32-1 with 150gn hard cast everywhere else.

I really like my Ruger SP101 in .357 with a 4" barrel. I carry it in a belt holster loaded with hardcast bullets. It's compact, stainless, has plenty of punch, and is a legal hunting weapon in Washington State (4" barrel min).

I often pack the same! 158 cast over plenty of Alliant 2400 has a lot of power for the weight.

Glock .380 when i'm not in grizzly country. Basically only for 2 legged foes. Glock 29 10mm if i'm worried about bears.

I don't carry a backup handgun while hunting.......I just carry my primary carry Glock 20. But in every day life I occasionally also carry my backup, a Ruger LCP .380 with laser sight.
