Been a member for a little while but just moved to Franklin indiana and took a job out of bargersville. Looking to chat with some locals about hunting the area. I grew up hunting the public land mountains of Virginia and West Virginia. Attached is my public land buck from Virginia 2019. Would be willing to take someone back to VA and help them experience the deep public land mountain bucks.

More less looking for info on the Hoosier and Charles deam wilderness areas as far as pressure goes. I enjoy to backpack in and stay for multiple days at a time and not sure if these areas really have that opportunity. I have had absolutely no time to scout with the moving process, work, and the family so I’m going in blind.

Your going to find some pressure there but not a whole lot if your willing to pack in a ways. One thing I know about most Indiana hunters is, if they can't ride there 4 wheeler to the base of their stand they aren't going... there is always exception though.
I do know there are some big bucks in those woods though.. but you have to be willing to go wheres others don't want. People will be coming in from the lake side also.

Thanks for the info. I was kinda worried about pressure coming from the lake side as I know very few put the miles in to get in deep. I don’t have access to a boat or that would definitely be my way of travel. Honestly I’m not comfortable nor confident in myself hunting the flat ground up here so I’m just trying to hunt terrain that I’ve always hunted.

You might check in with the guys at the Outdoorsman on 135 in Greenwood. Doug McPherson the owner runs a great shop there and they are always helpful. They have an indoor archery range upstairs. Start shooting there, maybe an event or two, and you’ll strike up some friendships and possibly open up some hunting opportunities.

I Actually met Doug the other evening when I went up to check my bow after the move. Very nice guy and runs a great shop!

I've been buying my first license there 25 years ago.
Is Scott still upstairs? I've haven't been there in years.

Don't worry about the flat land. Deer are deer. Patern them and get in a stand.. don't over look camp atturbury. Should be a little.closer to home and I've seen some great bucks come out of there. I'm not sure of the military side is still doing passes to hunt on the base..

No Scott’s not there anymore. He went out on his own making custom strings and I don’t recall what he’s doing now.
I recall shooting there late October evenings when the shop was still downstairs (back when Gary was alive and ran the place). We’d have baseball on the TV and pizza ordered in. That must have been back in 88 or 89 though. Good times!

Hello J. Nice public land buck! I am from northern Mi and planning a bow hunt in the mountains of SW West Virginia. Bow only counties. Any tips or pointers on deer hunting the mountains would be much appreciated. Never hunted mountains before.
