Hunting a national forest near my home with no cell service and I’d like a basic gps that I could mark waypoints and make sure I don’t get lost. I have onx and BaseMap but don’t trust my phone when there’s no service. Any recommendations?

I have a Garmin 64st for sale on the classifieds that would fit your needs.

I used a Garmin ETrex 20 for years for that exact purpose. Worked perfectly. I have moved on to my phone and InReach mini. It's yours for shipping if you want it.

Compass and map as the backup.

I'm sure someone will chime in on potential issues but I use Gaia on my iPhone and it has always worked fine even out of cell range when it switches to using GPS.

I've had a Garmin Etrex for about 20 years like the post above... also used it for many miles of survey work before they had fancier options. Nowadays, I just use my phone (GPS works without service) and keep a compass handy. I wouldn't spend more than $200 for a GPS now, though.
