Congrats.

Sounds like you're aware of what to do butchering wise in the future.

Only other comment I'd add is be careful running back to someone in the woods, especially when they're shooting or looking for something to shoot! Nobody intends to shoot someone, but when someone is looking for an elk to shoot I wouldn't want to be making a bunch of crashing noises heading towards them.

Cheers

Congrats on a very exciting first trip!

Couple things on the quartering part - if it’s below freezing it won’t kill you to lay some quarters down on the cleanest wood or rocks you can find without game bags. Best to just have the bags with though.

In regards to being cold- it’s amazing how warm you stay breaking down a fresh bull.

All I can say is congrats from one newbie to another! You did it the hard way. I broke my cherry with an outfitter this year. We were fortunate we didn’t need to pack the meat/head out, we had a Polaris ranger with a sled carry it out (and us). We did work to get to the elk, but didn’t have to work to get off the slopes. Congrats to you and your dad!
