Talk to Mike at HCA. Look into his barrels, pretty awesome technology and uses benchmark blanks. I’ve got a 300wm build he’s doing for me and can’t wait. I believe he’s running a discount on his barrels for rokslide members.

The "best" barrel is one that has a perfectly cut chamber. I have run Obermeyer and Krieger in .284. Both were quality barrels capable of .25 moa with the right load. Disclosure, the Krieger was 7RM and the Obey .284 Win. I see you are in Nor Cal; talk to Marc at https://spartanrifles.com/ He builds a bad azz stick.

My preference is Lilja. One on a 7Rem and another on a 280 Rem. Dan knows how to build barrels.

Ill second Mike. He is building a 6.5 PRC for me. Super excited for it. He is well knowledge and very easy to work with. Just call him, doesn't hurt anything.

I do my own machine work, chambering....yada yada. I've never had a makers barrel that didn't shoot well if my work was good.

I strongly doubt that you will out shoot a 9# rifles potential if you use good parts and the machine work is square.

I'd start with what's available in your price range and who your smith likes to work with (I use all of them, some guys are loyal to one or two).

I think you'll find actually getting your hands on the parts is the hardest part of building a custom rig.

I've tried most of the "name" barrel makers and have settled on Lilja as my barrel of choice.

I went all out on my 7 Mag. at once and it was expensive. IMHO, I would start with a Nikon or Leupold scope with a good set of rings and bases. Get rid of the SPS stock and the if it has the Xmark trigger get rid of that also. Put a good bedding job on the new stock. And last if you still need to, change out the barrel. All the other stuff will still help even if you have to change the barrel.
I have a Model 70 7 Mag. with the CRF action, McMillian stock, Krieger #5 1in9 twist barrel, Timney trigger, 3.5-10x40 VX3 B&C scope. It shoots 1/4" if I do my job. With 150 grn NBT and 65 grains of IMR 4831.
I also have a Rem 700 in 30-06 that I had accurized. It did help, but if I had to do it again I would not go that route again. The rifle still doesn't shoot as good as a custom barrel. And what it cost it would have went a long way toward a barrel job.

I've had lilja's, kriegers, Hart's and a proof. For my 7mm build I went with a benchmark barrel and it shoots great! It's a spiral fluted sendero contour. Not that you can tell how good it is or anything from a pic, but who doesn't love a little rifle porn. Below is a pic from when I received it from my gunsmith. The second pic is factory HSM 180gr Berger ammo at 850 yards during ballistic validation. Rifle was built by Chad at Long Rifles Inc.

Its a mesa precision carbon stock. Went with it because it had the ergonomics of the McMillan, without the weight.
