Been using OnX maps on the Iphone for a couple years now, and while I really like it for hunting Idaho, I haven't been very impressed with it up here in Alaska. Is there a better option?
You could take a look at Avenza. No subscription, just get maps from their online store. Some are free, some you buy. If you don't see the maps you need try reaching out to one of their vendors. I like this one.
I'll second Avenza. I've been using it now for several years and have found it to be very user friendly and fairly inexpensive with pretty much all topo's only costing .99 each.
I use gaia, and have been for four or five years for all of my hunts and remote pack-raft floats up here. I'm very happy with it.
Just be sure that you down-load/save to your phone (called "my maps" on the ap) the mapped area where you will be hunting before going into the field. I can save a pretty large area in advance. Once in the field using my saved map section, I'm always able to actively interact and locate my position, track, navigate, and pretty much do everything on the ap while my phone is in airplane mode and conserving battery!
The landmarks that I have made for each and all of my hunts in recent years are always available on my phone for reference in "my maps" on the ap, regardless of my location anywhere.
