Ascent is the pant I wear for summer/dry conditions...Mountain pant is for when its colder.

Try the SG pant, it's heavier than the Ascent, lighter than the mountain...

+1000 on the Wranglers....I just got back from a 4 day trip to CO and wore these......hard to beat. If you want a step up but not much more $$, the REI Screeline pants on sale ($40) are my next in line........

What he said.

For $20 something a pop, I have a few pairs in solid colors I wear all the time around the farm and hunting. Zero complaints for the cost. If they tear, I will get a new pair. But I am a few years into these 3 pair this far.

Big fan of Prana pants. It stinks you are having issues with the loops. I'd stick to something as light as the Zions. An August hike will benefit from something you can roll up or zip off. I prefer the roll up kind.
