I just preferred the layout of the Late Season over the Timberline 3. I prefer the zippered access and larger main pocket. Later I will get a 26" Duplex Frame with a Longhunter Legacy for my dedicated backpacking pack. Both packs look great and have similarities, but I can't even say that I'd get the DT3 over the Highcamp 7000 or Longhunter Legacy just because of what I prefer.
Here is one reason I chose the Late Season over the Timberline 3. The Eberlestock Spike Duffel would have a tough time sliding in and out of the Timberline 3 vs the Late Season. The Late Season will swallow a Eberlestock Spike Duffel with room to spare, but that is simply for travel purposes.
The Late Season has a larger main pocket than my Eberlestock, so it will fit my backpacking gear with 5 days worth of food no problem. Then if I need extra space, I can easily attach a pod or two to the exterior of the pack for holding extra and most likely unnecessary gear.
