Blacking out rear sight?

I'm in the process of learning how to shoot a pistol (SA XDM Elite) well and find myself having a hard time focusing on my front sight due to the white "u" on the back sight. I tried covering it with electrical tape and it helped quite a bit, but that doesn't seem like the most durable solution. What would be my best semi-permanant option for blacking out that rear sight (or should I just not worry about it)?

A lot of guys will use blacked out rear irons. I've seen guys use a sharpie to color in the white, nail polish is another solution, or just swap out the rear sight. I personally have standard irons with no dots on my carry gun, however I use an RMR with that pistol. My M&P 2.0 9mm has a fiber front but a serrated rear sight. I've found that I personally don't like anything on the rear sight anymore.
