Well we were off to a good start of the salmon season here in NW WA. We got seven nice hatchery Chinook during the first week of the month long season. Largest was 15 lb (netted a 20+ lb wild that we released). Then we got an email notification from the WDFW yesterday afternoon saying it's closed. Not closed after this weekend, or after Friday, but right now. Unbelievable, and this is after no winter fishing for the first time I can remember. So one week of fishing and they are going to decide if we even get to fish for coho later. Arrrrrggghhhh, this state is driving me nuts.
Not bragging but had to vent somewhere, resume the bragging from those who can still fish.

My oldest and I backpacked in intending to spend 3 days on the river for his 17th birthday. Spotted a wildfire on our drive in. It ended up only being 1-1/2 from our camp so we only fished 1 day. Hiked 9 miles of river and caught around 100 cutthroats/rainbows, 7 bull trout and 1 mountain whitefish!! One of the best days I had on the river ever!!

Nice! I always have a tough time distinguishing between an artic char, Dolly Varden & a bull trout. A lot of the difference is geography related it seems. I assume you were fishing in Idaho. Do you have any pics of the bulls you caught?

Nice! I always have a tough time distinguishing between an artic char, Dolly Varden & a bull trout. A lot of the difference is geography related it seems. I assume you were fishing in Idaho. Do you have any pics of the bulls you caught?

Unfortunately no pictures. Yes we were in Northern Idaho. The phone was in the pack every time we caught one and we wanted to let them go quickly.

This may seem mellow, but the just-turned-5 year old caught his first fish he truly got on his own. He baited the hook, cast the line, and landed this one by himself. He has reeled in many before, but this is the first one on his own. He was so proud and said "I am gonna be a fisher-man now!"

Limited on rockfish off the Norcal coast last week. Lost a monster ling too. Had a 30’ grey whale within 50 yards. Kayak fishing, best last minute decision to bring it that ive ever made.

My fishing partner, Joe Reynolds & I floated it in 1990 with one of the USFS guys that lived in Dutch John. We were a bit incredulous seeing all the trout lined up in rows, just waiting for a food morsel to drift by. When a boat, tube or raft drifted over them, they would part a bit, then move right back into position. We were lucky to hit just when the cicada hatch was taking place. Our flies basically consisted of a small black sponge with legs. Over the course of two days, I'm guessing we caught & released more than 100 trout of one variety or another. Of all the tailwaters I've fished, this one was the top dog.
