Here's what I know about BRA operations regarding the "haul rd option":

Bettles, AK is a small village hub about 2o-25 min flight from the Dalton Hwy (Haul Rd) at Pump Station #5 known as Prospect Creek airstrip.'

They use this option for hunters who drive highway vehicles North to avoid flying a scheduled flight at higher costs and excess baggage fees for hunting gear all the way from Fairbanks and back on the flip side with meat. If you added the costs of Fairbanks/Bettles going with excess bagge fees and returning with meat and other excess baggage fees....it's considerably cheaper for hunters who can drive the Haul Rd to a point as close to Bettles as linearly possible to save even more flight costs. Bettles is unreachable by road EXCEPT for winter, despite what the maps might reveal....

Prospect Camp airstrip is an established runway with plenty of length and lights for safety, so it's a perfect fit for being close to Bettles and accessible from the Haul Rd. This makes BRA's operation practical for option seekers.

On the flip side of the hunt, logistics from the field and back to Bettles and then back to a highway vehicle saves about $900 for two guys who would otherwise take the air route from FBKS to Bettles and return.

hope this helps

Thanks Johnboy. I’ve got caribou in mind. Hadn’t considered the meat on return.
