Cabela's new price matching effort seems like an attempt to stay relevant-especially for club card holders..

I would not be surprised for this to be short lived but seems like an attempt to be competitive. Read the details but they will match a surprising number of retailers including Amazon, Scheels and even Walmart. Products must be either in stock or available on the website for purchase-no rain checks. They will even match and reduce by 5% for club card holders

Doesn't change the fact that they might not have all the products you need but it appears to be worth looking at to get best price. Read the entire policy. here-- https://www.cabelas.com/category/Price-Match/2750221080.uts

Here are the stores they will match

Qualifying Websites: If your comparison is to a product offered for sale online, that must be on a website operated either (A)
by one of the following online retailers: Academy, Amazon, Backcountry, Brownells, Cheaper Than Dirt, Dick's Sporting Goods,
Field & Stream, Gander RV & Outdoors, L.L. Bean, Mack's Prairie Wings, Midway USA, Optics Planet, REI, Scheels,
Sportsman's Warehouse, Tackle Warehouse or Walmart; or (B) by the manufacturer of the product (which is selling
direct-to-consumers online). Check back periodically for updates to this list of qualifying websites.

I was pleasantly surprised to see this. Better than nothing.

They needed to do something, their pricing has gotten outrageous since the buy out.

Was looking at some ice fishing gear earlier this winter. Shack I was interested in was $150 more at Cabelas than Scheels and Runnings. Some mittens were $40 more at Cabelas than Scheels or Runnings.

Just canceled my Cabela’s card, After it being the only card I have had for almost 40 years. They are going down the toilet in every way. Had 69.00 in points, they sent me a gift card for them.

Scheels has been awesome for price matching, they price matched Camofire for a tripod a few months ago. I just used the last of my Cabela's points and plan to close that card.

Never really understood the price matching thing. You’re asking me to do the work finding a good price that beats yours, then come back to you and show you the price you should be realistically selling something at, then buy it from your store? No thanks. I’ll get it from the place that had the best price the first time around. Car shopping is a pain as it is, I’m not about to jump through those hoops for hunting equipment.

Best Buy took this approach as part of their plan to turn around the company after Amazon really hurt them and it is working really well for them. Of course that’s was not the only change they made but it was part of the plan.

Their price hike was crazy, use to buy 22-250 ammo there and it was $18 for a 20 round box after the buy out that same box went to $25 . The gun area use to be always very busy, now it’s crickets.

Too little too late for me.

Tried the price matching thing twice since BP took over, here's how it went.

First off, I had a ton of gift certificates from Christmas, Cabelas used to be my favorite store.

Thought I might pick up a Ruger 10-22. Online Cabelas was $100 higher than local stores, went in with price match info. Sales associate could not do it, I pressed further, he got the supervisor. Supervisor scrutinized the ad to death, went in back room for 20 minutes. Came out, said it was not "like for like", "the stock was a different color". "Nothing he could do".
I left pissed off, bought gun at competitor.

Still had gift certificates.

A month later, thought I might get a nice smoker. Online Cabelas was $100 higher than competitors, went in with ad for price match info. Same story, supervisor came over, he would not match. Love this part... Said, he "will have to Find The Difference". It was identical in every way. Almost. He found it, the Cabelas smoker has one more wire rack. Not "like for like". He don't have to match. I left pissed off again.

They won, both times. They kept their product, I kept my money.
Notified friends and family - No more Cabelas gift certificates!

I am in the process of doing the same thing. I have their Black Card too, and what does that get me!! I don't know when the last time I actually went to the store to get something. It has lost its luster IMO. I have had their card for just about 20yrs now and there is not benefit for me. So I am looking now to see what is out there and I think I may just pick up a Delta card. At least I can earn FF miles that I can use for travel on trips.
It is just a bummer to see Cabelas a shell of what it used to be.

I price matched online with Cabela's this past fall? Just hit up chat, and they priced match easily, dumped all my Cabela's cards and have not bought from them since. Normally good ammo deals in the fall on top with those gift cards that were to be had for a good % off.

Funny this thread came. I live in South Florida 15 miles from a Bass Pro. I hail from Connecticut where they have a Cabelas that I love to visit and eat a elk sandwich for lunch.

Anyway, dad, WWII vet, 95.5 years old with an onset of dementia coming, forced me to come visit.

Went to Cabelas with my older brother. The place is as close to junk clothes from China as Bass Pro is that I was SICK ! No more of that high end Cabelas inventory to choose from. Gone pretty much are Sitka and UA replaced by some Chinese camo patterns on make shift rip off garments of UA, Sitka and Kuiu.

Disgusted.

I never even went to look @ the boots I was so underwhelmed.

As other have said, gift cards only valid at that chain is the primary reason I price match. Another reason would be driving distance, I get a mailer ad and have a local retailer match it instead of driving the 50 miles to the advertisers store. The third reason is inventory, the advertising store may have inventory in the warehouse but not onsite, I go to a competitors store who has it onsite.

Try the online price match system so you can use up those gift cards. I’ve had good luck with that. It is a little more cumbersome to checkout but you’ll get to spend that $100 instead of leave it in a drawer.

Cabelas has only gotten worse with the BPS buyout. It used to be I could walk in and the customer service counter would match an ad, bring the product to the front and checkout on the spot. This was important because it kept me from walking through the store and spending more money on new gear that would replace still serviceable gear.

Texans42, you are correct. I was very disappointed when they didn’t have a Buck Knives 101 or 105 in stock. The scope section still had a good selection. It’ll be interesting to see how their new store brand ATV line sells.

This I’m not jumping through hoops on stuff in the $5-1000 range. I’ll just buy it at the place with reasonable prices...

I remember hanging onto my cabelas catalog like they were gold. If my wife seen me with my Cabelas catalog she knew we were about to get 10 more dozen duck decoys, waders and hunting clothes. Man I loved Cabelas.
Since the BPS buyout I don’t even factor in or consider buying from BPS/Cabelas. Neither are even in my thought process. I travel all over the US hunting fishing camping and hiking each year. I drive by Cabelas/BPS like they never existed. I’ve never been to one of those Lion porn shops along the interstate but if I had to stop between a Cabelas/BPS or Lion I’m stopping at Lion.
I got a Cabelas card and have had it for 30+ years. It’s such a shame Cabelas has gone down the drain.

A Cabela's card was the first credit card I ever had and I was a black member for nearly 10 years until the buyout. Since then, I've put about $45 on the card. I used to love to get the $100 off of a $500 purchase coupons that were offered to club members and I would use those coupons and points to buy rifles and optics.

I remember when there were only a few stores, it was a big deal to take the trip to the store but the nostalgia wore off once Cabela's started to compete with Sportsman's Warehouse out west and began building smaller stores. Hopefully they can right the ship and take the company back to the glory days, but I wouldn't bet too much on it.

Girlfriend has had a $50 gift card for close to two years, was never worth buying there because of their crappy quality, sub par service, and BS pricing.
Today was the day, we were driving by and she decided to burn it. I stayed in the truck and made hunting plans for tomorrow instead. Never would i have dreamed that i would do that years ago. Credit card program is a joke, balance will remain zreo for the rest of its days.
RIP Cabelas.

I have a friend that likes cabelas. Anytime I get a gift certificate I can just sell it to him straight up.

For some reason people don’t like giving cash as a gift but it’s still king to me. Gift card industry is a complete scam.
