Calling Cows

This is my first year hunting during the rut (hopefully) with a muzzleloader, but only have a cow tag. There is lots of info and articles about calling bulls, but not much about calling cows. Anyone have any experience/advice? I’m hoping to use it as a tactic once I get close and am not going to be trying to call them from far distances.

Honestly when I use a cow call, I get just as many responses from cows as bulls.

We were hiking out one day (archery season w/ cow tags) and spooked a bedded herd of cows/calves. The 8 or so elk scattered in different directions. I immediately started with the lost calf call sounding as desperate as possible. We had a cow come right back in about 60 yards out. I had tried to get my partner to set up a little further away from me or else he definitely would have had a shot.

Worth a shot if you scare elk and they scatter different directions.
