If you had to choose a magnum cartridge (7mm rem mag, 7PRC, 300 win mag, 300PRC, 300wsm) to hunt mostly elk and elk size game with only factory ammo what would you choose and why. Max range being 500-550.

7mm Rem Mag or 300 Win Mag. There are a lot of choices of bullets and loads for either.

300 WSM if you want a short action.

PRC is somewhat the easy button for accurate factory rifles / ammo and accuracy. 7mm will be plenty for that range. So a 7prc would be my choice.

Seeing that the 223 thread is such a success, I thought maybe I would start one for the Creedmoor/260. Seems like people are asking a lot about using them and various bullets, especially for elk. I've used mine for the last few years almost exclusively. I have some pics of bullet damage, albeit not nearly as many as I should have, from a couple deer. I'll try to briefly describe the ones I don't have pics of.

If you have experiences, good or bad, post them up. Of course, pics are great, and add a lot of valuable information. Maybe it will take off, maybe it won't, but if it does it...

This isn’t in response to anyone I particular, but there is an up tick in the amount of “I want a XXXX distance hunting rifle” traffic the last few months. I am getting a lot of questions relating to this, which I do not mind helping, but thought a public post might help answer some questions. It’s an attempt to get to actually using your rifles.


People online tend to act like 600/800/whatever yards is a rifle, cartridge and BDC scope purchase away. When someone asks for advice, or says I’m building an -insert whatever rifle/cartridge you want-, people are discussing hardware not...

This is going to be a barrage of questions. It will help to view me as a skeptic relative to the matter at hand. I am going to do some load development for my new 6mm Creed. I live in the southeast where shots are rarely taken at more than 100 yards. But, I fancy that I will take a trip out west one day to hunt antelope, so I am going to do my load development with an eye toward the possibility that I might shoot out to say (for the sake of discussion) 500 yards. This is a hunting gun.

Time to order bullets. I see questions asked frequently across various forums asking about using...

I wonder why anyone would have to choose a magnum cartridge? Need more details.
This coming from someone that has killed elk with 300WM, 300 Wby, 30 Nosler, 338LM, & 416 Rigby.
And just to spread some enlightenment- you spelled Rokslide incorrectly!

Sticking to the parameters OP asked for: 300 WM. Factory ammo options are everywhere.

What I would probably pick - 6.5 PRC or 7 SAUM.

For Elk, any of the 30 Magnums are great. 338’s are even better.

I killed an elk with a copper mono at 525yards last year out of a 7mm rem mag. With rapid expansion eldm's i think the reach is likely 2x that and thus really only limited by your shooting skill.

My vote is 7mm rem mag because you can get a 750yards+ accurately killing factory rifle set up for under 2.5k (600-700 for the tikka, 1300 for the scope, couple hundred for extras like a tripod rail, rings, maybe a stock upgrade if you are pushing it beyond 2.5, ...) and no gunsmith skills required

Either 7 rem mag or 300 win. Personally, a 7 mag about 8 lbs is an ideal mountain gun. I shoot 160 gr Partitions and it seems to kill everything it’s pointed at. A 300 mag with 180s is just a little more pop and I’ve never seen a buddy hit something and had the bullet bounce off. It’s right at my recoil tolerance so a better weight for me is probably a pound more. 180 gr Partitions have a great well earned reputation.

Either combinations have killed so many animals they are the most boring choices someone could pick - no drama, no autopsy needed. Squeeze the trigger and notch the tag.
