Envious of chukars and huns. Going to road trip to MT I think next fall for huns, or an attempt at huns. I shoot a skeet #2 in my Franchi Affinity for birds out to about 40 yards.

When I want to kill them good, I shoot a light, 12-gauge gas autoloader. The Browning Maxus is my favorite. Modified choke. You could get away with improved if you are a good shot. I really get after it and am not easy on my gear, so take that for what it's worth.

Looking ahead, I really do hate seeing and leaving spent shells on the landscape and am considering carrying an over under. +1 to the gentleman who praised the Beretta 686 line. Really fine, light shotguns that swing and point well for lots of folks. (I'm a shotgun coach and hunter recruitment specialist so see a lot of shooters and lots of gun). Might get a little turkish over under like the CZ Drake since they offer a stock cast for us lefties. It's 1/4 the price of a LH 686.

End of day, shoot what you can hit with and don't mind banging up a little bit. Lots of rocks and scree out there if you are chukar hunting the right way.

I really like having a tube extension on my gun for those birds that popcorn after the initial flush. And like Holocene I hate leaving hulls on the ground so I take my time and try my best to find all of them. After a little bit you get a good idea of the direction your gun ejects. It’s good day when you get your birds and a vest full of empties both yours and others you find.

Those little Franchis are sweet. My buddy has a 20g that is a lights out chukkar, quail, pheasant, grouse gun.

I'm partial to semi autos and have a tough time recommending anything other than a Benelli Montefeltro or UL (essentially a Monte with a chopped mag tube and stock) 5.3 pounds...say whuuuuut

Benelli; I was hunting just north of Richland in the canyon about this time 4 years ago, I was 60. Rain then freezing rain then snow on top. It wasn’t as bad walking as you might think, until it wasn’t. Fell and broke my leg. Used the barrel of my Benelli as a splint. Got into Ontario, got fixed up. Sent the barrel back to Benelli with an explanation, they sent me a new one- free. I’ve been hunting those bastards for over 50 years, hate the damn things.
I love nice SxS shot guns, in particular 20s and 28s. The only time I’ll use those is early when it’s hot and dry and there are enough birds down low near the river to keep us busy. Typically easier ground. In any event I like the Dickensons, Ithaca’s and Brownings in your price range.
mostly for chukar I carry an ultra light Benelli 20 gage.
Hunt chukar the first time for the experience from then on its revenge.
Which breed of pup are you getting?
Richland, boy that brings back memories. My dad and his buddies would hit Richland every fall and I would tag along. It was the big trip up from SoCa for us. All through the 70’s and 80’s until the old er land owners started to die off and the new family owners would not give permission to hunt. Sad. Great little valley for pheasant, quail and up on the breaks for chucker.

Some day i’d like to go back and see what’s still the same.

I have a like-new Benelli 20 ga Ultra Light that I'm looking to sell (got in Jan. 2020)...have less than a box through it. I got it on a trade from a buddy, and I already have two 20s and a 16 that pull most of my upland duty. I have a Carlson extended light mod choke, 3 factory chokes, shims, manual, box, etc. Can ship to FFL. I'll post in the classifieds shortly. Its an awesome gun...I just have a few other awesome guns.
