So 7 of us are putting in for Elk tags this year. Was wondering if we are better off to put in as 1 large group or would our odds of drawing be better with 2 groups with less people drawing?

Anyone in the group have points? If some have points, they would be better going together. Otherwise it might depend on the units you are applying for.

Most of us don’t have any points which i figure will hurt our odds.

In Co the person with the lowest points determines the number of points the group has going into the draw. So, if one person has 0 points the group goes into the draw with 0 points.

I would apply in 2 groups. guys with points vs guys without points. This also breaks your tag number down some. If you are nearing the end of the draw and you draw a tag what if there are not 7 tags left? then you are all out. If you have a group of 4 and draw its ups your odds a little id assume.

Applying as a group in CO never helps your odds of drawing for the reasons stated above; it can either hurt your odds or have no effect on your odds depending on point totals, tag quotas, and applicant numbers.

You can check historical draw reports to see if applying as a group/groups is likely to have any effect on your odds of drawing a particular tag. If everyone in the group is above the minimum point pool, group size won't have any effect on draw odds. If anyone in the group is in (or below) the minimum point pool, the group's draw odds will suffer compared to applying individually (or in multiple groups). You can't know for certain what the minimum point pool actually is until after the draw, but you can get an idea by looking at past years:
