Funny, my experience was just the opposite. I was seeing good bulls all summer & once the season started I couldn’t find any. I did finally find one on day 4. It was one I saw while scouting in the summer. He was a couple hundred yards from where I had seen him in the summer. Kind of neat since I have live pics of him in velvet & my whole family got to see him alive too. Neat experience.

they can move, I had one glassed way up in the willows, he got up, walked 2ish miles and went through a mountain pass. When they want to go, they go, walkers!

Well the truck is loaded and I’m heading out here shortly. It’s been 108 days since I pulled the tag and I will have spent 28 (maybe 29) of those days since scouting my unit. When the sun comes up Saturday it will be go time. Thanks to everyone who pitched in any info they had and a big thanks to those who offered to help pack - keep an eye on your texts/PMs - ha! Looking like I’m going to go at this one mostly solo and hope to update the thread as the hunt goes on when I have service. Can’t wait…

First leg of the hunt is in the books and no bulls were harmed by me. Seeing plenty anf a couple of shooters but they haven’t cooperated yet. Heading back up tomorrow for 4-5 days and hoping to turn this guy up

Found these 2 bulls on the Thursday before the hunt opened but haven’t been able to turn them up since.

Well I’m done. Shot my bull Friday afternoon at 3:30 after sitting within 30-80 yards of him and his cows all day. He was grunting and thrashing the willows but I only saw him a few times through the brush. He finally stepped out and right as I was about to shoot he bedded down and I was left waiting.

Ended up shooting him at 42 yards with the muzzleloader (my bow sitting on the ground 100 yards behind me) and he expired within seconds. I was carrying the muzzy and bow but didn’t think I was going to be able to get into range given the terrain and number of animals but they ended up feeding towards me. Oh well…

Took me 2.5 hours to get him caped and broke down and another 3.5 to pack him to the truck solo.

Not a bad way to break in the walk-in…

Thanks guys! I used 420g No Excuses bullets over 60.5g (by weight) Blackhorn 209 with W209 primers. Shot entered tight behind the shoulder and the bull was dead within seconds. The bullet shattered a rib on the off side but did not exit.

Double congrats on the bull AND the walk in. Rent that sucker out!

My friend shot a bull with a 400gr+ ML projectile, and he didn't move. Must be something to slinging anvils.

Thanks. I haven’t had the best of luck with muzzloaders (mostly because of Powerbelts) so I was very happy with the No Excuses bullets on this hunt. Not the fastest at the powder charge I settled on but plenty fast enough at 1420 FPS and didn’t beat the hell out of me either.

No Excuses 420g .50 cal
What's the copper color in it? Or is that blood residual? Good to see they retain their weight. Did you use a felt wad behind them or just the bullet on powder? And how much powder (BH?)? I settled on 70gr (by volume) in my Accura V2 with the 420's because everything above that was all over the place, but never chrono'd it.

That’s just blood. I used the felt wad No Excuses recommend over 60.5g (by weight) BH 209

I had trouble getting the felt wads to stay "evenly" on the back of the bullets when putting them in the barrel. I thought that might be some of the accuracy issues??? The only reason I play around with these things is for my daughters. I'm a much better shooter with my bow at 100 than I am with the ML at 50.
