Was hoping to get some feedback on unit 77-78 near Pagosa Springs. I hear it’s crowded and willing to go long on foot, but how long is long? Just want to know what it takes to get away from other hunters. Thanks.

You can’t outhike some people these days

10+ miles one way, with 2,000-3,000ft of elevation gain may get you there. Plan on renting a chopper for the pack out though

Pagosa Springs? There will be Texans.

One unknown variable here of significance during 3rd rifle is snow. Depending on the year, could be a big snow (or 3) by 3rd rifle. Snow line will usually be above 8000 feet that time of year, but 10k could easily be snowed out, meaning you may have a difficult time getting “deep” in that area since “going deep” almost always = gaining elevation.

3rd rifle is tough on public land and one thing I’ve learned is that not seeing other hunters, even for days at a time, is no guarantee that you will see animals. 3rd rifle is all about overlooked “pockets”

Don’t be shocked if it looks like there is a camp every 20ft on some roads, small cities come to the woods that time of year.
