Day 4

First shot I’m not ok with. Rushed my shot and I knew it was low but not expecting it to be this far right. Outside of vitals. One more day to go.

Day 5

Felt a lot better today. Actually had cross winds but held until it died for a second then let this one go. A touch low but Felt good.
Enjoyed this challenge. Thanks rokslide!

Day 1 - Bow is a Prime Centergy Hybrid 72lbs @28.5”, Quivalizer, Nock On Elevate rest, Option6 Sight, Nock2it Release. Wanted an 8” vital but overspray made it 8.25”! Maybe I’ll need it... haha. Set up for shot was good, execution was quick. Didn’t think too much about it.C63BED9A-A11B-4A22-961A-BD7ECB8EA5BF.jpeg
Day2- oh boy! Close shaving this evening! Set up was good, shot was a bit wild...think I was trying too hard to hold the aim rock steady rather than letting it float.. to much thinking!. funny how this challenge induces an element of pressure! No Wind. I find the green of my kill zone makes it difficult to pick up the centre - this perhaps adds to the realism as deer don’t walk around with duct tape patches on..😂. All good training. Plan for tomorrow is to focus on set up and then be more natural in the shot & follow through.
EC22858C-10CF-4F8B-B8D5-90168BF4F460.jpeg716873C5-ADF5-4066-8599-7EA936CE8EEC.jpeg
After yesterday’s liver shot I took my time in set up and thought of a natural execution of the shot - focused on back tension. Great to see so many rockslides enjoying the challenge.54A34785-F213-4A07-A2B6-FB60F07C0E72.jpeg
Last week I changed my thumb position on the release from flat to hooked (both using back-tension) I’m starting to wonder if this is pulling me right a little. I’m gonna revert to my old style tomorrow to see if it makes a difference. Shot felt good. Wind seemed to be isolated to the firing point and was very slight - I wouldn’t normally allow anything for such a wind but it did put me thinking - for a second. My arrow is pretty heavy; around 520gr - Cool to see people pushing their limits with longer ranges - I think for now 50 is a good limit to self impose, but I’ll be working toward 60 for next year.EC1EFD47-4392-49B8-AEA9-877B3F433E9A.jpeg
Day 5 - I don’t think we have ever had 5 days in a row with so little or no wind and such beautiful weather. Having let down once, I went through my shot routine and focused on back tension - let the pin float & off she went! I used my old thumb position - (I need to solidify this and look at slight pin adjustment too.) This has been a Great challenge - I am confident that, for now, a 50 yard MER is correct for me - time to start working on increasing it! Ironically I have some Day Six arrows to cut and prep! Great to see such support for the comp. I’ll be using this tool during the year to test myself and my perceived improvements!!

Hey Roksliders! This will be the first time I have done this challenge. I'm shooting a Hoyt RX3 at 70#s. My draw is 28.5" and I'm shooting field points on my Black Eagle arrows. I chose 40 yds as my MEF and that is what I'll shoot at.

Day 1: I had left to right wind about 5-10 mph and feel I over corrected.

e297f73e50175ed28a2b29d128a44986.jpg

Day two: We moved the target outside because the neighbor had a car parked in the way and I couldn't get 40 yds. It's about 65° and there is a very slight breeze from the left.

2329b36725fadc3a08871df37bbd3f67.jpg

Day 3 in the books. It's clear and cool this morning. Sun was low and made it hard to see since it was directly behind the target. Good practice for a real situation.

283799857eb97a4a1a382878e39c433e.jpg

Day 4 was not a good day for me. Beautiful bluebird skies this morning and I just flat out punched this one.

The best part about the last day is that now I can get back to practicing! This has been fun though.

Hey Rokslide, my dad talked me into doing the CBC with him. I chose 20 yds for my MEF.

Day three: I wasn't very happy with this shot.

Day four: I shot better today. One more day to go.

Last day and I held way too long and then punched the trigger.

This is my first time posting on the forum but I am excited to get in on this Cold Bow Challenge. It has been about a year since I have shot my Bow seriously but I want to pick it back up and I thought this would be a great way to kick off the year. Unfortunately I live in a relatively populated area so I can't get out and shoot my bow in my backyard every day which I would like to do. Normally I shoot in my basement which is about 19 yards but I didn't think that would be good enough for this challenge. I was able to set up my target on one side of my backyard and shoot from the far other side and am able to get 37 yards which is about what my effective range would be with my current lack of practice.

It was definitely the "Cold Bow Challenge" today because it is about 14 degrees at my house right now...

Bow Setup:

Hoyt Vtec compound bow set at 65 lbs
QAD Ultrarest HDX
Trophy Ridge Fix 5 sight
G5 Head-Loc Air 6 arrow quiver
Carbon Express Mayhem Hunter 350 arrows
Bloodsport Gravedigger 125 gr broadheads
Scott wrist-rocket

Target - Homemade - based on a video that Corey Jacobson did a year or so ago.

cb2.jpgcb4.jpgcold bow day 1.jpg

coldbow day 1 zoom.jpg

Day 1 - 04/13/2020

Conditions = 14 degrees, no wind.

coldbow day 1 placement.jpg

A little low for the first shot but not bad right/left.

Day 2 - 04/14/2020

Conditions = 5 degrees (COLD!), no wind.

coldbow day 2 placement.jpg

This shot was a little low as well but at least I am consistent...

Really kind of liking starting my day this way.

Day 3 - 04/15/2020

Conditions = 24 degrees, no wind.coldbow day 3 placement.jpg

Still a little low but getting closer.

Day 4

Conditions = 28 degrees, no wind.

coldbow day 4 placement.jpg

Must have hit a soft spot today (orange nock). Still a little low but overall I am pretty happy with my group.

coldbow day 4 placement 2.jpg

Day 5 - last day :(

Conditions - 17 degrees, no wind.

coldbow day 5 placement.jpg

Still hitting low.

Overall impressions:

Big thank you to Rokslide for hosting this challenge. I really enjoyed it and think it will become part of my routine before I leave for work. Overall, I am happy with my shots even though they were a little on the low side. I am fairly consistent but I definitely need to fine tune my sights and tighten the group up before the fall.

Thanks again guys!!!

BTW - all of those holes in the target that are really high must be from my kids... ;)

Day 1 (4/12/20): Just back from a huge ski hunt trip and I’m frankly amazed my bow is still sighted in, it took a beating.

Day 3 (4/14/20): Not proud of this shot. Got busy after work and almost forgot about the whole thing. Rushed the shot and pulled it. Might’ve gotten some lung but just barely if at all.

Day 4 (4/15/20): I’m beginning to struggle with low light shots, age I guess. It’ll definitely be something I practice moving forward.

Day 5(4/16/20): Shot in better light, back in the money.

Bow- Elite Impulse 34, 82 lbs, 27.5" draw, MBG Ascent Verdict 5 pin slider.

Arrow- Easton Axis 300, 50 gr insert, 100gr field point, 3-fletch AAE max stealth vanes, nocturnal nock ~500gr total weight.

Target- 10" diameter paper plate @90 yds (pushing my boundaries)

Day #1: 15-20 mph crosswind, 30 degrees. Aimed for arrow drift ~12". Only drifted 6".20200413_155917.jpg

Day #2: 45 deg, 20 mph crosswind. Underestimated windage. This is a LONG shot when its windy!20200414_163407.jpg

Day #3: Cold, windy and spitting snow. Prob 30 degrees and gusting wind down the canyon. I got lucky and shot in a lull, shot broke perfect. Result reflects that.

Day #4: Sunny, light wind, 35 degrees. This shot was a straight wiff, at 90 yds not much room for error.

Day #5: It's always windy here apparently, but at least warm today, around 60. I need more work before I feel really comfortable at this distance. 20200428_165706.jpg

Hey guys,
Shooting a 70# Hoyt Rx3 @ 28”. Arrows are Beman ICS Hunters with brass inserts and 125g points. Total arrow weight is 450g with around 18.5% foc. I am shooting at 60 yards.

Wind is around 5-10mph today, shiny tape is roughly 2”x2”

Day 2 had slightly more wind but still managed to break a good shot.

Day 3 may or may not have gotten a bit sketchier as I couldn't make it to The range. To make 60 yards it’s possible I opened my side fence and shot from the middle of the street. This is a Rinehart mini elk at 60yds.

Snuck out at lunch and back to the range for day 4 and it couldn’t be nicer. No wind at all.

Well, I dusted the bow off this afternoon, haven’t shot since last fall 🤦🏻‍♂️

I’m going to say 60 yards is maximum effective range.

I was going to shoot yesterday but the wind has been insane. It’s not any better today but that’s good.

So the bow is a Mathews Vertix at 75 pounds. Shooting a 580 grain Day Six with 125 grain Sevr heads (supposed to be bear hunting next month but I don’t think it’s happening)

Day 1-
Probably a 25-30mph 90 degree wind, almost missed the target. Should have held a little more wind I guess

CA5349CB-3B9D-431E-A4EE-7589D6A447F2.jpeg

Day 2, it’s cold as hell, and I felt like I dislocated my shoulder as I pulled my bow back 🤦🏻‍♂️😂 I should probably shoot more my god I don’t remember it being this heavy.... but I managed to clip the vitals in a variable wind.
953500A8-DC81-4458-B09E-8D7DEB2371C5.jpeg

Day 3, for the first time in a week, the wind was calm, light snow falling, thought I better shoot now while it’s calm.

08C3F7C5-1451-418C-B74B-52FB337B250E.jpeg

Day 4, more wind and some white stuff on the ground. I feel like I’m shooting this setup better in the wind than many other setups I have had. D94AEC22-B6A1-4A4F-87A1-1C3F19AF0EEA.jpeg

Day 5, perfect conditions, calm and cold. Just snuck it in the vitals.
708225CE-1609-4F78-8EA5-4714F0198FE4.jpeg

And like that I guess it’s over, thanks rockslide staff for putting it on. It’s a great way to practice.

I am shooting a 2017 Hoyt Defiant with Montec G5 broadheads.
-Roughly a 31 inch draw(I think) at 80 pounds.
-Tightspot 7 arrow quiver
-QAD rest
-300 spine beman defender arrows
-Black Gold 7 pin sight
-Scott Archery Talon release

Since we are encouraged to talk about our gear I feel like I should mention a few things. This is my first bow so I don't have a ton of experience but have been shooting for about three years. So far I have loved my Hoyt. Embarrassing as it is to admit, about a month into shooting and a few days before deer season started I dry fired my bow and blew the strings up. Dumb move on my end just not paying attention while shooting with a buddy (member: oldave). Thankfully my local shop took strings off a bow they had and had me fixed up pretty quick. Other than the strings, the bow held up and has shot great since then. I don't know much about arrows, different rests, or sights. But will say the 80 dollar Plano bow case I got from Amazon has been pretty great. The tightspot quiver I have been using is alright but seems to be super loud.

I decided my MER is 50 yards. I shoot further than this of course but after reading more about MER decided that 50 was a range I could pick my bow up and shoot pretty solid with no wind.

Day one:
Wind was pretty bad but not consistent. Decent shot from the bow case. 20200412_152049.jpg

Day two:
Good weather. I think I drifted some or jerked the shot a little. A little disappointing.

20200414_075326.jpg

Day three:
Shot my other target because my buddy has our other one. No wind. Probably rushed it a bit.20200416_183607.jpg

Day four:
No wind. Great weather. Pretty spot on shot.
20200417_160654.jpg

Day five:
Weather was good and no wind. Happy with the shot.

My setup:

Hoyt Carbon Spyder Turbo ZT at 73/30
Boss Hogg 3 pin
Trophy Taker Smackdown
5 arrow quivalizer

Day Six 250 spine at 30.5”
50gr centric system
Four 1.5” bohning x vanes
100gr Kudu points for the contest

MER is 60 yards and my target is the big ring in an 18-1

Day 1. 36° and 15-25 mph winds from my right to left. Shot was to the right a little ways. About 1.5” out of my MER target zone. But still good for not shooting since December.

8d7ac40e7e88ec89a6301145602a14fb.jpg

Day 2. 48° and 21mph sustained winds. Got really lucky with my shot. Just a few inches to the right, but still in the MER vitals.
8d3b7a36398ec0ff3d427163f80d4fd0.jpg

Day 3. Got busy and didn’t get on last night. 51° Wind was about 6 mph almost directly in my face. Inside the ring! Gotta love good weather.
9b8ac50ab4bfc8fe465851f5732a2c30.jpg

Day 4. 28° and wind from my back and left to right also lots of snow. Shot felt really good. These heavy arrows and skinny shafts don’t seem to be bothered by wind at all. Shot was in the zone but to the right a hair.
ceb684bdd591e608f0c099bb843875dc.jpg

Day 5. The nicest day I had to shoot and I yanked it. 55° and 7mph wind into my face. Pulled it right

SetupIMG_20200412_180115044.jpg

Day 1: 22 degrees, winds around 15ish making it even colder. First shot since November, was fighting the wind a bit and didn't execute a very good shot.
IMG_20200412_175917848_HDR.jpg

Day 2: 32 degrees, another storm blowing in with winds right to left again at 15ish. Shot felt better, but still rusty. This is a great kick in the butt to get shooting after my five arrows are flung.
IMG_20200414_175329589_HDR.jpg

Day 3: mid 20s and gusty windy. Snuck this in just before the snow hit. Still not good, but I definitely have my aiming point surrounded.

Day 4: 35 degrees, light breeze, beautiful evening. Sadly my best shot yet, but still out, guess I needed to fully surround the aiming point. Pressure is on tomorrow to at least sneak one in the white. Looking forward to shooting for a couple months and doing this challenge on my own.IMG_20200416_193145065.jpg

Day 5: 58 degrees, slight breeze, nicest day of the year. Couldn't find the white, but had the elevation mostly right again. I'll keep at it now and confident I'll be back with a much better group at 60 or 70. Thanks for an awesome challenge and for the chance at some sweet prizes!IMG_20200419_194911866.jpg
