Looking for advise from people who have hunted Shiras in Colorado or surrounding states before. I drew the Unit 66 bull tag and Colorado allows you to basically pick your season. Archery is Sep 7-29 Muzzy Sep 14-22 Rifle Oct 1-14. your experience? I am an accomplished hunter with all 3 weapons its just that the Rifle tag fits in with my schedule the best. My main question is when do the moose really start traveling and covering country rutting from your experience? How did your hunts go and what did you learn and what would you do differently? I also have stock so getting to a bull and getting him out are not really a concern. Thanks and feel free to PM also

You drew a unit 66 bull moose tag in Colorado?

What was the hunt code on your tag? It should look something like these:

Really? I’ve never heard of that, and I’ve been applying for 17 years in Colorado. Is it unit specific? Or listed somewhere in the regs? Not being a jerk, genuinely very interested.

The last week of archery I usually am seeing them out on the prowl. A couple years ago we had a young bull grunting and lumbering around in a small meadow below us. He spent a good few hours just walking circles and grunting.

I would want the rifle tag.

I like muzzleloader/archery the best. You can Pre-scout bulls and they seem to be in the same general areas. In the units I’ve hunted once the rut gets going you never know where they’re going to be. There was a big sucker hanging off slumgolean
Last year in September.

I drew a moose tag this year as well. I’m hunting archery but I hunt archery all the time. Probably stick with the archery season but might go for rifle season and hunt with bow depending on how
Im Feeling.

I will say in my experience (hunting moose with a family member a couple
Years ago.) we located bulls in the summer and as it got closer to the season The bulls would disappear. Seems they really wander during the archery and muzzleloader season. They will just disappear and cover country looking for cows. It does seem like during rifle season they can be easier to find.

Yeah I’ve heard they are wandering suckers! Buddies helped out on a hunt last year and were after a collared bull on the Grand Mesa and he ended up in Glenwood Springs

Everyone is in the same pool so there is no easier to draw code the unit I apply for has 16 tags if 16 guys draw rifle they have no archery or muzzy season that year.

Bumping this up. The snow is almost melted enough I can get into some of the areas I want to check out. Any other tips, pointers, good the bad and ugly of previous moose hunters?
