How much is everyone spending on their custom builds?
Just under $5k on 338 edge build with March optic, Nf base/rings, manners eh-1, timney, shilen , etc. Needed a few extras for length but totaled about $4700. Got parts from all over and a deal on scope.

Heres where I am at right now...

Stock: Manners EH1 $600
Barrel: HCA $615 with rokslide code
Action: complete rem 700, $400
Muzzle brake: $100
Smith Fees: $600?? really not sure about this one.

What am I missing and where am I wrong?

Edit: didn’t read whole thread, see the op has a plan now, and it got more expensive😁

Seem pretty close but it’s easy for a lot of additional little things to add up. Most of your component prices seem a little on the low side but not unusual with sales, group buys, or on classified forums. Keep shipping costs in mind.

Some of the builders list prices for all their services on their website.

Barrel chambering - $300
Cerakote - varies $150-300
Stock bedding - varies $100-250
Muzzle threading- $75-150
Trigger tuning - $50? I just pay a little over $100 for timneys.

Will your brake need timing or turning? If so, add $

Are you running factory bottom metal? I’d want something with more mag space.

Any action truing? Was it previously a rum action? I’m not familiar with rums but might need some additional machining to feed well if it wasn’t previously a rum.

If you figure a grand on the labor....the rest is all about your parts cost. If you get crazy with coatings expect to pay for it.

Im always thinking about the cheapest way to build a new gun and my latest/best combo that Ive penciled out (yes I know the OP has already signed on to HCA):

Barreled action (bighorn origin & button rifled barrel) from keystone: $1184
TT Standard: $165
Cerakote: $150
Manners dbm mini-chassis: $360
Manners EH6 (or similar): $570
100 bucks for shipping

Comes out to $2,529

Bolt it together at home. No smith cost except cerakote. Could save 100-300 going with trued rem700 depending on source. I don't see how you could go any cheaper without sacrificing heavily on your stock. Gets hard to seriously consider any production rifle over about $1,500 when you could stretch out and do this.

I have been tossing around a "Hunter 280 AI build", but its hard to justify

SS Rem 700 LA - $375
Bartlien 2b 24" - $350
Timney - $110
BDL SS Bottom Metal, follower, spring - $100
McMillan Edge - $636
Kampfield Knob/Bolt Fluting - $175
Chamber, thread.cerakote - $500

That's over $2200.....I can wait out Barrett and get a 24" 280 AI for around $17-1800 when they come available...

6.5 CM Build

Blueprinted 700 w/ PTG 1 Piece Bolt - $600
Manners EH2 - $600
Krieger #5 - $330
Barrel Fluting - $150
PTG Bottom Metal - $130
Timney Trigger - $130
Accurate 5 round Mag - $70
Talley Lightweights - $40
Gunsmith work - $865
Chamber & Fitting
Side bolt release
Pillar bedding
Cerakote action & Stock

Total - $2915

My gunsmith is pretty reasonable but you could definitely cheapen it up a little.

X-caliber barrel will save you some money
Fluting is an option that isn't necessary.
Used BDL bottom metal Would save you some cash
Don't need to cerakote barreled action or stock.
Side bolt release isn't necessary.

Nothing fancy and not done with it, but.
Savage 12FV .308 $219
Savage bottom metal and mag $90ish
Harris bipod $70ish
Leupold 20 MOA base $46
Vortex 34mm rings $63
Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 $650

After taxes I'm sitting right around $1100.

Pretty close to my build out but I’d skip the bolt and knob work. Also try and be patient and save $100 on the stock.
