When my dad was around 12 years old, he was given this Model 70 243. This was the rifle he carried on most of his deer hunts. When I was a kid, I remember him and my uncle calling it a “tack driver”.
After my dad passed about 10 years ago, it has sat in my safe without a scope. Each year I told myself I would get it set up and take it out hunting.
This past spring I found a good deal on a new stock and bought it. After installing the stock, the gun didn’t have that sentimental feel. I sold the new stock and re-did the old stock, added a new recoil pad, then put a scope on it that I had sitting in the safe. Last week, with the cooler weather, I finally had time to take it to the range.
Well this thing is definitely a shooter. I did 3, three shot groups! With the first box of Factory hunting ammo, all three groups were around 3/4”. I then swapped to another box of factory hunting ammo. Again, did 3 groups of 3 shots. These bullets shot even better with the best group at .28 and the worst .41. Think I found what I’ll be shooting through it, now I have to try and find some more.

The trigger is around 5lbs, so a spring is ordered and hopefully can get the trigger about 2lbs.

Here’s my question. I was planning on bedding the stock. With the gun shooting as well as it does, would you mess with bedding it, or just leave it as it is? Thanks

LOVE the figure in that wood grain! As great as it may shoot, doesn't hurt that she's a looker too ;)

Great looking gun! Personally, I wouldn’t bother bedding it if it is shooting like that! Definitely get as much of that ammo as you can.

Thanks guys! Think I’ll leave it as it is. Never had one bedded, so I wasn’t sure if I needed to or not.

Definitely get as much of that ammo as you can.

I bought 4 boxes of that ammo. Luckily a local store has been carrying some, so I will be randomly stopping by and grabbing more of its in stock.

Oh man that is a piece of wood, one would pay a pretty penny for grain like that one sports.
