"Typically, you should allow about 30 minutes of no movement before approaching it. "

By then you should be able to tell it's dead because it's beginning to bloat.

Well, I guess the prey has to get one every once in a while. Unfortunate though.

I always approach downed game from behind as I wouldn't wan them to jump up, forward and straight into me with those antlers.

Yikes, but ya, there are much worse ways to go.

Definetly a case for throwing a rock or stick at the head and always approaching from the rear until you can poke em with the muzzle of your rifle.

During a deer drive in some thick aspen regen, i had a buck "charge" me. Was not sure if he was just peeling out or fighting for his does. But i hip shot and dropped him at 3 yards max lol

I certainly would have never thought it would be within the realm of the remotest possibilities. Bear or Cape Buffalo, yes. Prayers for his family.

At 66 years old he should be a well seasoned hunter but had lapse in caution when approaching downed game
Sad new for the family
