Hi all, new guy here. Wanted to post a review of my 3" belt knife from Deer Rock Knives. I just received it yesterday, and it shows fantastic workmanship. The grind is nice and even, handle nicely rounded/sanded, fits my hand perfectly. Hair popping sharp (mine is in magna cut). Came with a nicely formed kydex sheath, the knife positively clicks in. Can't wait to get it bloody! Greg was an absolute pleasure to deal with, excellent communication, finished when he said he would, fast shipping. I can't recommend him enough, he will be getting more business from me!755.jpg

I would like to hear the review of how it performs dressing out a deer/elk. I am also looking to upgrade/change my knife set for quartering; any suggestions?

I used mine on an entire elk and it was still shaving sharp. It performs extremely well, really "unzips" the hide. My Deer Rock belt knife is the longer version, believe it is 3.8".

I will report back after I use mine on a few whitetails this fall. Will also be taking it to Alaska next September on a moose hunt, fingers crossed it gets bloody then. I do almost wish I had gone with the bigger version, but will withhold judgement till I use it on some animals. Maybe I will just buy another one!

I have been using and enjoying smaller knives more recently. Here's my standard carry when hunting. It works well and nothing too fancy. That being said there's always room for another good knife in the pack.

Small knives can certainly be mighty! I took apart a caribou with this "bird and trout" from a guy up in the Adirondacks.

If properly heat treated you should get through 3 deer before magnacut needs a touch up.

When people say that want to change up what they're using I'm always curious what they are changing or wanting to change from. What are you currently using?

I have a bigger and a smaller belt knife from deer rock, both in magnacut.

2-3 deer, deboned is about max before I want to touch up the edge.

I did cut up an elk this year with my smaller one and by the end it was getting g to where it needed a sharpen. The bull died in gritty burn dust though, and that included quarter/deboned, and skinning the head.

I wouldn’t expect any knife to still be shaving sharp after cutting up multiple deer or an elk.

Both my belt knives are excellent quality and sharpened quickly. As of now my favorite knives for processing game.

What did you use to bring edge back. I got one of these knives too and don’t have much experience with magnacut and am not the best sharpener to being with.

For a knife with a properly ground edge already, like my deer rock knives have had, I’ll use a stone, usually just 1000-1500grit for major stuff, any rolls or chips on the edge. Otherwise I just use a leather strop with diamond compound on it, usually 1000-2000 grit.

On the cheap having an assortment of 800-2500 grit wet sandpaper (can be found in automotive at Walmart) works well. Finish with leather even if it’s just a Belt.

My experience is about the same. My hunting knives can handle dressing and breaking down two deer before needing a good re-sharpen, provided you're cutting meat, fat, tendon and skin and not simply hacking at the bones!
