Maybe in an environment where you can't hang your pack from an elevated branch to keep critters out of it.

In Colorado we did have a squirrel chew through our plastic camp box to get to the bread and trail mix.

I've never personally had an issue. However, I have seen food, water containers and sleeping bags that were cached for a week chewed on. I label and ziplock my breakfast, lunch, and dinner in quart ziplock bags; snack go in sandwich bags. Then I put each days food in a gallon ziplock bag. Then all of my food goes in a mesh stuff sack. If I were worried about rodents, I could hang the mesh bag. My theory is that having the food in ziplocks reduces the food odors and stops rodents from coming after my food.

Looks like carrying enough of these to store food for an extended trip would be heavy.
