drop camp elk hunt

I'm not sure if this is a thing but I'd like to venture off to different states and I've heard people talk about people that have spots set up or maps of areas that give you decent chances. I'm not looking for a guide or outfitter. I all for boots on the ground and e scouting but it would be great to have some local intel or some where to start. I live in Utah and would like to check out montana or colorado but I'm open to something else.
