Ill be on public so no baiting, but it looks like with the super dry weather we are having that no fruit bush is going to still be holding in mid October, so im going to try and scout dense patches of mature oak on ridge saddles and look for sign. If i can find some fresh sign the plan is to set up and watch.

Heavy mast crop around my end of NC (Haywood), so they will definitely be fattening up on beech nuts and acorns, it's just finding what trees they are feeding on, Couple times I've been deer hunting thus far I haven't ran into any bear sign around the oaks I've hunted. Hoping to get after them Halloween week since I'll be chasing elk in Colorado when season opens.

Got the Marlin .44 sighted yesterday. It hits under softball size for 6 shots at 100 with a leupy 1.5-5 scope so I’m more that ok with that. At 50 it’s inside a can lid or better. Luckily it likes the cheaper PMC starfire with 240 SJHP. Really a perfect Appalachian mountain rifle. Holds 8+1, fast and small and weight about what some people pay big money to achieve with carbon and titanium. Shots under 125 are normal where I’m at anyway.

Well, we made the NC western opener. It’s been dry, it was windy, and we were too high in elevation. Took us too long to figure out that the bears were eating the corn at night and retreating to the deep thick hollers during the day. 17-18 miles in 2 days. Pretty damn country though.

Me and a buddy juts went on our first bear trip in mountains of SC last week. We did a pile of walking and riding. Saw some beautiful oak flats and lots of deer and hog sign but not a single bear track or pile of poop. Deer season closes while bear is in so the third day of not seeing any sign, we resorted to catching some mountain trout and eating good. Can't wait to try again next fall. Hope to go up for a few days this year before deer season ends.

I'm probably going this weekend in Western NC. Haven't scouted this year, probably going down some old logging roads, walk some creek beds, and wander around in some areas I found sign last year. If I find sign I'll probably hang out in that area against a tree.
