Eating less on hunts?

One of the areas I hunt is at about 9000ft. I have never had any altitude sickness problems. No headaches. No problem sleeping. But I’m just not hungry. I just eat because I know that skipping it would become problematic.

I carry a couple of granola bars and a mix of pumpkin and sunflower seeds to snack on during the day and remind myself to throw some fuel in.

On one hunt, we dropped down and shed about 1500ft of elevation. I had to laugh. I hadn’t had any appetite for five days or so. That elevation change resulted in my appetite returning with a vengeance. I took a break on a rock by a stream and ate the best granola bar of my life. I remember it like it was a religious epiphany. I wanted to eat the wrapper.

We were back up higher at camp that night and I was back to eating dinner because I knew that I should.

Altitude does some weird things to Flatlanders like me.

Like others have suggested, you may have similarly suppressed appetite if you’re hunting a little higher.
