I’ve seen some mixed reviews about the ELD-X bullet at closer range. I’m testing the 178 grain ELD-X out of my 22” barrel Tikka and it’s around 2550 fps at the muzzle. Based off the lower speed I’m getting at the muzzle, Will this bullet likely perform well on thin skinned game at ranges closer than 100 yards?

I’ve seen that bullet from a .308 shooting the same velocity take down a wide assortment of game- bear, Buffalo, Aoudad, red sheep, dall sheep, ibex, pigs, deer, elk. From 30 yards to 500 yards.

Anyone got any reviews or feedback on what is a acceptable muzzle velocity for the ELD-X to have acceptable performance at ranges under 100 yards? I’m also testing it in my 24” barrel .30 06 so velocity is around 2725 FPS.

What ever it comes out at will work. Seen the 168 amax punch through bunches of shoulders faster than that under 100.

Is the AMAX similar construction as the ELD-X?

This was in the offside shoulder of a 130# sow after shooting her at 90yds with a 20" tikka 308. She went about 60 yds.

My stepdad shot a doe 20 mins later with the same gun. Shot looked good. She walked off. Stood for a few minutes. Then disappeared in the woods. We couldn't find her...not a drop of blood. The next day we found her picked clean by the coyotes. I was dumbfounded.

Bummer

Like real bummer

I like the softness for longer range hits and the high BC. Results like this above are concerning.

My rifles like Federal Fusion but kinda the opposite of the ELD-X. Fusions hold together well under 100 yards but some sprinkling of reviews of the Fusions penciling through at long range. Fusion minimum recommended terminal velocity is 1900 FPS which is about 400 yards out of my 22” barrel Tikka.

Funny you mention Fusion. We've always had good experiences with them. I'm using them in my CZ 308

Look long enough and every bullet will fail. I would say that holding together that good on pig is good.

I’m late to this thread but I’ve used both the eld-x and amax in my 308. In my experience the eld-x has performed much better in killing game between 50-400 yards. The amax does the job but they usually end up running a little and the eld-x just seems to drop elk and deer
