I just got my elk skull back from the taxidermist. I got it hung up using a large skull hooker. Everything went well, but I am not happy with the look. To me, it seems that the skull is really far from the wall, almost awkward looking. Is there a way to mount an elk skull more flush to the wall? Ideally I'd like it to be close (1" for the skull, 1" for the antlers) and tight fitting.

Run a piece of wire through the atlas joint at the rear of skull and make into a loop. You can suspend from the wire on a screw. Result is teeth fit parallel and flush to wall, antlers hang parallel but slightly off of wall.

I like the Mountain Mike's hanger - for an elk, I usually put a small wood block between the bracket hinge instead of just tightening the bolts.

This one was done by Rocky Mountain head hunters. He adds in a wire holder. I’ve also done my own with some wire double wrapped to make a loop. I’m paranoid so I also put some 50lb fishing line double wrapped in case the wire ever failed. The hook I was able to screw into a stud, but the other I used a dry wall hanger that spreads after you push it through the drilled hole. Takes some faith but it’s held fine. Here ya go!

I like to put them on a log slice and then put a wedge on the back to set the angle to the wall.

I also use wire and then crimp on an electrical battery terminal end. Its an eyelet and makes it easy to take them on and off.

If you want to stick with the skull hooker, you can adjust the bracket to tip the nose up more, getting the horns closer to the wall at least. You probably already know this, but there's several different settings you can choose from by moving the screw that attaches the prong to the arm. It won't get your skull closer to the wall, but tipping the horns back would help a little.

No, the issue for me was how far off the wall the skull is. I scrapped the hooker and went with wire and a j hook.

Here is an update. Looks much better now. Used a double loop of 19ga wire.

Great thread! Thanks for all the info and ideas. I've got two bulls on skullhookers in my living room, and they look fine (mostly because they are above exposed rafters in a high ceiling), but they do stick out quite a ways. I might try mounting one flush to the wall IF another big bull ever comes home with me.

I have a skull I've been needing to hang but couldn't decide which 'holder' to go with. Wire and hook it is!
