28N to 300RUM - Gives you a little more room for error. 270s etc. have killed tons of elk but shot placement and range become increasingly more important.

I have never shot something and then said, "I wish I had used a smaller round".

I'm in a similar boat. My current short list is 7 SAUM or 280 AI. I have a 6.5CM shooting 2900+, so 6.5PRC is not worth the effort/cost.

Look at tikka in 6.5 creed great do it all gun

At $749, the Tikka T3X is probably the best value you can get in a bolt gun. My superlite 6.5CM shoots ~.5 MOA w/ hand loads at 2905FPS 143 ELDX. I recently put it in an XLR chassis, but haven't shot it since. I will likely be changing the barrel soon to accommodate a suppressor.

Nonetheless, I'm looking for more energy for elk in case I make a marginal shot.

If you load your own I'd say 270wsm. If not, 270win. Cost is better and more available. Works fine for antelope to elk. Moose shouldn't be an issue either if they kill them with a 6.5 all day long across the pond.
