I’ve been trying for a few months to build a sinew backed juniper bow that I would feel good about elk hunting with. I finally decided it’s a little above my skill set. I ordered a hickory backing strip and put it on a really nice piece of cedar that I cut. It’s not as cool as a sinew backed bow but it shoots great.

59# @ 29” and 66” long. The tips are Barbary sheep horn. I don’t have the patience for finish work so anyone who is a craftsman would hate my stuff.

I didn’t draw an elk tag this year but maybe I can find a leftover tag or shoot a bear with it.

Nice! I would expect the sharp corner on the shelf to be a stress riser vs a radius there but I am no bowyer

Nice work! It’s gonna feel extra special when you take game with it.

What did you use as a finish? It looks like the hickory has something dark rubbed into the grain. Pine tar? And any pictures at full draw?

Nothing quite that primitive. The whole thing is stained with regular old wood stain to make it a little darker. The hickory is so white I wasn’t really a fan of it.

Full draw. Its definitely not perfect but it gets the job done.
My camera is messed up so parts of pictures are always blurry.
