Took my first Mule Deer in Colorado at the ripe old age of 59 this week. Solo hunt and I scored at 9,000 feet near Gunnison. I was tipi camping and first day I spent hiking to the top of the mountain examining the sign. I was getting my lungs acclimated since I live at 600 feet. Found a lot of sign going between two stands of dark timber about 400 yards apart. Next morning I was laid out prone on a ridge like a sniper at day break. Saw a few does moving between the stands of trees and then the buck made his move. Shot him at 250 yards with a 7 SAUM with a Berger VLD. That was another first, as I had never taken an animal with a bullet I had loaded. Used the gutless method and caped him out. Took me four loads to the truck 300 yards up hill to get him out. Glad for that, I need to work harder to get my fitness up for the next hunt.

Update, all good must be balanced with some offset. After I finished my hunt, I spent some time in Gunnison and two days in Colorado Springs visiting my son who is the Army. In one of those places I contracted COVID, so my time since the hunt was challenging. I am three days away from being over quarantine and most of my symptoms have subsided with a little help from Regeneron. So, the moral of the story is don't let your COVID guard when on your hunting trip.

Congrats on the first muley buck! Usually seem to be in hard places to get them out, but they provide the best views!

Very Cool!! I got my first mulie last week 5 days short of my 58th. Solo truck camping. Got him just in time, snowed where I was at 8000’ that overnight. Had to pack up a cold wet camp but super fun. I did hook up with some other local guys who helped me out but it was a great time.
