Getting out of California

Be sure to consider QUALITY dental and medical care that takes your insurance. We moved to a smaller mtn community of 5000 and it is a real challenge, even in the much larger communities within an hour or two drive from us.
This made me laugh. An hour or two is a big drive?😁 That’s nothing for driving around mt or wy for
Services or stores. We do that at the drop of a hat. I know you are in Wyoming now but those drives are daily routine. The fact that you recognize this as an important consideration kinda tells me most folks moving in really don’t get it.

I know a lot of the folks moving in are good people. And it isn’t just whether they are “good people” or not it’s just the sheer number of them. The quality of life will decline with the numbers.

You missed the point. Even the communities an hour or two away may not be network providers for insurance, as is my case. I retired from the military, 35 years, and can't believe how few take Tricare in WY despite the fact it pays as good as or better than many health insurances.
I am well aware of distances in WY, so yes, I get it. My wife grew up here and we have been coming out for two and a half decades, camping, hunting, and fly fishing. Visiting family and friends.
I was giving the OP information that may be critical in their consideration, not knowing if they have health issues or children with health/dental issues. It could have a bearing on their decision. I was not complaining about my drives as I could care less... I have the OnX going and chalk it up to road scouting when traveling from point A to point B. Since I am retired, most of my road time is recreational anyway.
As for the OP, yes it sounds like they want big city convenience with the "Western Flare". Not my cup of tea.
So... laugh all you want.

75% of the posts on this thread are off topic. Stay out of my neighborhood and you’re not welcome here should be the title of this thread. So much for a community of hunters. Thank you for your information sir.

Friend Manitou1. It probably read as an insult but it really wasn’t meant to be one. And I think the fact that your insurance isn’t accepted many places kind of goes along with the overall point.

As you age health care becomes a more important criteria for where you live. Not something on the top of your list when younger. There are counties in south and west texas where you may have a couple of physicians, all primary care. Have a friend that lived between Laramie and Saratoga Wy, has macular degeneration, only one retina specialist in the entire state and is in Casper. One ophthalmologist in the NW quadrant of the state. No surprise that they may limit participation in some insurance plans let alone medicare or medicaid. Have another friend who lived and retired in Bayfield Co, developed a macular hole, closest retina doc was in Albuquerque, had surgery spent 2 weeks in a hotel before he could go home. When you are used to easy access it’s a rude awakening. I value living in a small rural community and accept the compromises that are required but if you have serious health issues think long and hard before the move.

Another thing to consider on the medical side is that with the influx of newcomers lots of healthcare providers are overwhelmed. It can difficult to get appointments even if you do find a match on insurance. GP’s even in a comparatively large town like Missoula have openings stretching into 2023 for new patients.

And FWIW to OP, I’ve got an ex who is a dental hygienist. She said the jobs in MT didn’t pay squat compared to what she was used to in other states. She lives in Colorado now.

Did you really expect people to spot burn their own area for a random guy on the internet who happens to have found Rokslide too? Seriously?

Not in the slightest bit. I never asked, what town do you live in and why should I move there. It was more of a reference question. Just like if someone asked me what would be some nice places to visit in California, I could list of a couple dozen without hesitation. I understand the frustration with all the new additions to their neighborhood, trust me, I get it.

Another gatekeeper failing to realize the context. Love it.

I guess I’m missing the context again. How is the above not what you asked in your op?

“So the question is, where are some places we should strongly consider for purchasing a small amount of land and either building or having a successful time finding a nice residence with a family focused environment? Leaning on you folks to help dial us in.”

Well, this all went South pretty quick!
To the OP: You can glean a lot of info about schools, taxes, demographics and housing prices by googling the specific communities on the net. I am sure you already know that. Try finding a few communities that interest you and then maybe ask around on non-hunting sites.
My buddy and I joke as he is retired LEO and we both ended up building our homes in the same valley about two hears ago. We HATE non-residents, lol! We always say to each other: "Man, they hated us when we were vacationing here"! Funny, but mostly true. When you love something, you protect it with all your being. There have been nine houses built in our quiet, quaint little valley in the past 18 months. We gained over 1000 new residents in our sleepy mountain community in the past year. Everybody has the same right to chase the dreams that we had, but nobody likes to see their small mountain towns becoming the next Reno or Bozeman... and it is happening to ALL of them. Sad.
Too many people on this spinning ball, but few want to step up to contribute to make it less populated.😁

Thank you for the information. I shouldn’t have fed into most of it but I appreciate all the valuable information gained so far. I will probably end up in the same boat in 10-15 years if this ends up going the right way

Feels like every couple days I see this same post whether it's on here or some other online hunting group I'm in saying something along the lines of "moving to Montana from (insert liberal state or Texas) where should I go? Just trying to buy some land and build a house on it" (Sorry OP not saying you did the latter part). Why can't I see more people say they are moving somewhere like Ohio or Arkansas lol.

I lived in KeyWest a couple of years ago, had friends that were locals, some had lived their whole lives there. All were leaving when they retired, too expensive to live there in retirement. All but one were moving to western North Carolina. Hunt with a guy born and raised and lived his whole life in Whittier NC, says the retiree migration is killing his quality of life. Austin Tx has an average of 125 people per day moving there, try SW Florida in February.

Many of the larger cities in MT have ok medical car for emergencies as well as good dental care. Sure, you may have to drive an hour to get to one. For unusual or extreme illnesses, you might have to leave the state. I’m personally ok with that.

“Western MT” is a lot of area. It’s bigger than a lot of states.

Do look at the climate data for the areas you are interested in. The weather can vary a lot depending on which side of the mountain ranges you are on.

Politics varies as well. For instance, Missoula locked down for Covid while the county just South of it did the two weeks to slow the spread. Similarly, communities South of Missoula explicitly said kids aren’t getting time off for the kid protests while Missoula encouraged it.

All of the voting data is online. Seems to me that CA, WA, and OR are getting so bad that even Ds are moving out. Time will tell what that does to MT.
