I've got a Kodiak Island goat hunt coming up very soon and I wanted to see what information was to be had about how to preserve hooves in the field and proper technique on skinning out the head for the rug. It seems like it would be difficult to do a ventral cut and then try to skin up over the head and most difficultly around the horns, but I cant think of another way. So I doubt I will have to really be too careful since the weather should be pretty cool, but it could be pretty wet as well and if we get lucky early and the weather is warm I will have to do something since I wont be flying out for another 6 days at best. The other part is hooves I have no knowledge of how to care for hooves and in the field and was just planning on salting the heck out of em after removing as much flesh as possible from the cup . Also if anyone knows a good taxidermist who is good at goat rugs in Alaska I'd love to hear about them.
