I turn 62 this year. I retired at 56. I have thought about going back to work but the longer I am retired the less I think about it. I haven't found anything that I want to spend time doing other than hunting. I paid 39 years into SS. I worked 6 and 7 days a week for many of those years. I finally have time to do whatever I want. Sometimes that includes doing nothing. I like it.

I retired five years ago at the age of 38, and thought it would be grand until you realize all of the friends you have are still working. Ive had to learn how to do all of the things I enjoy by myself.

I currently have a job doing R&D that I find extremely interesting, but with a young family have had to cut way back on a lot of hobbies and volunteering. If I wasn’t working full time I would get back into paid on call firefighting, volunteering more, traveling, spend more time with family, and hunting/fishing.

I retired this past Monday, March 1st. Turned sixty Tuesday. We are finishing up our house build in WY and I will be moving there in two weeks. My wife is younger and still working. I have many hobbies: Reloading, rifle and bowhunting, fly fishing... but I already fear I will get bored.

My wife uses the word 'retire' - I really don't. I want to get myself doing things i don't want to stop doing.

My mantra is: Slow Down? Maybe - Stop? Never.

To me retiring is leaving corporate life, I’ll do things I enjoy for cash when I want, I just don’t see myself not having some sort of job even if I’m the boss.

I retired in 06 at 50, took two years off and then started working contract as a pilot/ escort driver for big loads. I like being able to say no I don't want to.

Anyone go back to work after retirement ? I am 55 and been retired a couple years. I don't need to go back for the money but maybe my mental health.
Only you can answer it and sounds like you have.

I retired 2 years ago, but have a contract that allows me to do part-time work. Highlight is that I can pick how much and when I want to do it. It really helps the December to April time frame where it's not conducive to much outdoors in this part of Wyo.

I retired in January at 62 after 40+ years of working. Now its about maximizing the time I have and the days are just flying by. Hunting, hiking, fishing, planning hunts, shooting my bow have all taken on a deeper satisfaction than before as I now have time to do it the way I always wanted to.
Plus, every night is Friday night and everyday is Saturday. ;) ✌️

Dad retired after 40 some years at sea, and got his class 1 license (CDL with no restrictions), and got a job on call driving plow and salt trucks, and filling a seat in dumpers when needed.

Then they sold their house and moved up island, so he ended up with a dream job, a gun counter guy. "So you're gonna pay me, to stand around and talk about guns, and people are actually going to ASK for my advice?!" He'd been doing it for free for years.

Then the store went belly up.

So he started driving water trucks on fires, and plow and salt trucks in the winter. Then he fell down last summer dragging a hose up a bank and broke his wrist. They won't bring him back, and who knows what he'll do next!

Someone mentioned 'volunteering'....there are medical studies that show people who spend X hours per week volunteering have lower stress levels, blood pressure and other health benefits. Do you have a skillset that could benefit other people in their walk in life? If so, think of the lasting impact you can have on their life as well as yours!

Anyone else think that retired is a horrible term?
I liken it to “Freedom”.
Free to do what I want, when I want. That’s how I’m handling my “crisis”.
well said!

My old man is 72 and works 6 days a week. Right now he’s got a 170 acre land clearing and logging project going on. He isn’t going to stop until he folds up. I’m 49 this year and he puts me to shame.

I can honestly say the vast majority of people that I know personally (not friend of a friend or some random guy at work) who have retired says they are busier than they have ever been. But, most of them were the people that put in 40+ hours a week and still had consistent activity. hobbies, other obligations. Some guys I had no idea how they would be in a trap league, run a small farm, run a trap line, hunt, fish, and still have a good family life all after a normal 9-5 job.

The ones that I know that instantly are looking for a job or get bored after a year really did not have a lot going on after work anyways. Yeah they would take their annual hunting trip for a week and did some weekend hunting and fishing. But, most didn't have any land to take care of...maybe no kids or grandkids, had no other hobbies like woodworking. They identified with work and didn't know what to do without it. OR and this is a big one....their wives are super needed and they don't have hobbies so they drag the guy down when he retires (this can happen both ways I get it).

My dad and father in-law are both retiring within a year or two...both own business and both worked their butts off in their fields starting as general laborers. But both of them also made time or had other interests outside of their business and will have no problems staying busy.

I'm 34 and I'd retire tomorrow if I could. Money is the only thing stopping me. Get that imagination working. I cannot fathom getting bored without a job. There is so much more to life than working for some asshole. You've spent enough of your life doing that. Now go live for you.
Me to man. I'm 39 and would flip both middle fingers in the air to my company and be peeling out flinging rocks in a hot second if they would let me rite.
I absolutely loathe going to work.
Sure I doubt I could spend all year off with my hunting bucket list.
Probably do some truck driving during the summer to pay for my fall hunting.

I retired three years ago but went back to work 3 months ago part time. One goal only for this, I was just short of being eligible for Social Security. I’ll have that taken care of on June 1st and then will be re-retired.
