The spring is definitely recommended and has a few benefits.
1. Eliminates any launcher flutter to prevent fletching contact.
2. Eliminates most of the shock transferred from the limb. This reduces wear on the internal components.

I've always used the spring. No real reason why other than I figured some engineer out there decided it was worth having and I couldn't argue that.

Hamskea recommends the spring. The spring helps with timing. I couldn't get mine timed correctly without the spring.
