Anybody here use HAM radio while hunting? Either to keep in contact with party members, or for emergencies? Im interested in getting my technician license and dabbling a little bit in it. Would be nice to use on the farm as well.

I know a few mountaineers that climb or backcountry ski big mountains. They use small handheld units and it works because they are way up high - line of sight. Base camp talking to summit party.

I frequently carried a radio in the Army and you never know if the dang thing is going to work unless you and the other party are line of sight. When you're in the trees, or on the other side of a ridge, it may or may not work.

For backcountry hunting, where you're down in the trees a lot, I think sat comms work better. If you and your partner both have InReach units you can communicate anywhere and see mapping with your partner's position.
