My son and I finally were able to do the Haul Road hunt for caribou and he connected on one. His first animal with a bow. And thanks to a great group of people from the Kenai for helping us out.

We live in Seward Alaska, so it was about 2250 miles round trip, we put 2780 miles on the truck total for this trip. We saw bou's everyday and my son had a stalk everyday, some of the bulls were small but we did not care. A couple were really nice bulls, however, the tundra walking is not like anything you have experienced in Montana. I hunted many years in Montana for elk and muley's, this walking is hard over the tundra. On day 4 we were able to watch a small herd coming from about 2-3 miles off and by 10:30 in the morning they were getting close to where he was able to hid by a bush and them came by, he shot the caribou 165 yards off the road and his shot was 55 yards. Some other guys stopped and help drag it to the road where we quartered it and headed back to camp. If I was coming from Montana I would plan on 2 weeks starting around the 20th of August and into September. Keep in mind the weather will be changing and it could snow. Some mornings for us were in the 20's and we left a couple of days early because a storm was coming. On the rental side of things, you can't rent a truck as most places won't let you drive the Haul Road. However, U-Haul rental will.

The trip was a blast and the scenery is so beautiful in the fall, bugs weren't toooo bad. Wildlife abound, muskox, wolves, grizzly bears and fox. Be sure to bring a fishing pole as the fishing in the Sag is awesome and the side streams are full of grayling.
