Heavy bullets in the 300 wsm

I recently acquired a custom 300 wsm and for my intended uses would like to run heavier bullets.

Rifle build is:
- Mack Brothers Evo Ti action
- Proof carbon 24” 1:10 light sendero chambered by PVA
- Mesa Altitude stock
- Mesa DBM
- 300 wsm accurate mags.

I know Accurate Mag says they can run up to 2.95” but measuring all 4 of mine I see no reason I couldn’t safely run 2.98”.

Anyways I am looking for advice on 200+ grain high bc bullets as this will be my mid weight do all rifle.

What kind of bullets do you usually prefer? Berger? Accubonds? Mono? There's plenty of bullets that will work depending on the game and how far you plan to shoot.

I’m doing load development as I type on a long throated 300wsm built on on tikka action. I running 215 Berger’s out of a 1:9 twist 25.5” barrel at 2920 FPS with a coal of 3.185”. Your 1:10 twist, I think will limit your options on high BC bullets. The 215’s at 2900 will be just marginally stable. The Berger 205’s will stabilize just fine in a 1:10 barrel though.

I like Berger Hybrids myself, my short barrel 300WM shoots the 215s at 2850 in a 10 twist and they're stable. Your WSM will likely shoot a little faster and work great.

Was curious how the barrel was throated so I called Patriot Valley and it’s chambered with a saami reamer so i will probably have some freebore added once I make up some dummy’s to figure out where I sit now.

Also found out that the barrel is actually a 1:9 so that was a nice surprise

You'll want about .100 more freebore than SAAMI I'd guess. I'm shooting 208s in a factory Tikka, and that's about what I need to get the boattail junction of a 208 ELD M out to the shoulder junction.
Mine are at 2935 at the muzzle. Three kills at 320, 750, and 935 have showed the typical eerily consistent fragmentation that I've gotten from every ELD M I've used (208-30 cal, 140-6.5, 73-.223). I'd love to try the heavier Cutting Edge bullets with all of the extra mag length I have, but I'll need a 1:9 for that.
RL 23 is working excellent BTW. 68.2 grains with a CCI 250 primer at 3.020 COAL. Three firings on some of my Norma brass and primer pockets haven't opened up at all that I can tell.

are you running a long action magazine with those? or the short with no binder plate?

Right now I have a LA mag with a spacer, and an SA with the binder cut out. Neither is perfect, both badly need shoulder stops. I'm considering Redsnake and LA AICS mags since the HCA ones are still out of stock.

Following up on this as I actually had this gun listed for trade as I have another 300 wsm that I am more familiar with. Decided to actually shoot it before I got rid of it and needless to say it will probably never leave my safe.

I was cleaning up my gun room and found some 200gr ELD-X’s from an old 300 WM so I decided to give them a go in this rifle. I started at 66gr of R26 figuring that to be an mid/ upper level load. The 200 eld-x touches the lands at 3.02” but my rifle uses Accurate Mags so I loaded my rounds to 2.97” to feed from my mags.

My rifle shot that load into 3/8” groups at 2840 fps and held about 3/4 moa at 500 yds. I know I’ve probably left 100 FPS or so of velocity on the table but this load is breathing easy in my rifle so I’m more then happy where I’m at for now.

once I can find some 200 AB’s I will work with them as well.

My rifle scoped with a 4-16 Atacr, bipod and loaded weighs 8lb 12oz so not at all a bad place to be for a do all rifle and I see it getting a lot of use.0CF45E3D-83B5-4E4C-8E89-F2B2D311AA1E.jpeg
