I have a Model 7 in Remington 260 that I want to change to a caliber that shoots a heavier bullet. I’m thinking KISS and re-barrel to a 308 Win. I will keep the same stock and barrel taper and length of 20”. Thoughts? Barrel brand? I have a gunsmith that will perform the change.

708 or 7 saw is what I would build. Shoot the same weight bullets as a 308 but faster wirh better ballistics if you hand load.

Or a 260 Ackley and 156s

You could have the bolt face opened up a little to the .540 magnum size, put an M16 pinned type extractor in, and that'll allow you to go with something like a 6.5 PRC, something off the RSAUM, or even a WSM.

One of the things that is so nice about working with a Rem 7/700 action is they are so easily modifiable.

If you stay with the standard .473 bolt face size I'd consider doing a 260 Terminator from Defensive Edge Rifles. They run in a short action and they're getting a little over 3000fps with the 140's. The 260 Terminator is their version of a "improved" 260. With Defensive Edge it's one stop shopping because they build the gun, have dies available right from them, and can sell you Lapua brass that is already formed and ready to go as well.

I’m a 308/260/6.5CM fan and have all, if I was in that position and wanted to shoot heavier, I’d send it to JES Reboring and have him bore the barrel to 308. Cheap fast change.

If you really want some punch, 338 Fed, 358, 375 Raptor are options as well.

Thanks for the replies. Keep them coming. I don’t reload so the 7-08 or 308 are looking pretty good. What brand of barrel?

338 federal. I was really tempted for my old 7. I’m going with a 7-08ai, but still kind of wish I’d gone with the 338. Use as a youth rifle pushed me to the 7-08 (ai just because I like to be different). I can load that down for mild recoil, I was concerned how well that would work with the 338. In hindsight I think it would have been manageable with a lighter weight hammer bullet for lower recoil use.

All depends why you want a heavier bullet?

I have two Model 7s- one in 300 SAUM just like having a compact ‘06 and the other is a 308 with a 16” barrel waiting for a suppressor. (I have a Barret FC in 7-08)

By Far your most versatile option will be a 308. I went with McGowen because it was super easy- just send them the barreled action and they do the whole thing rebarreled at a good price (military discount).

the only cheaper option as mentioned would be a rebore with JES but he ONLY does .338 or larger so you’d be looking at the 338 federal or 358 win. Definitely heavier bullets!

JES only does .338 and larger last time I checked....

great reason to go to a 338 fed or 358 win!

A 7-08 will push a 140 about the same as a 150 in a .308, anytime I try running the comparison charts they seem to fall within a round error of each other. There's a lot of .308's in the world so I'd go with the 7 to be interesting, either one has good options for brass or factory ammo so that's not a big concern.

I would vote 7-08 or possibly the new 6.8 western but that would require bolt modification. Since only 2 manufacturers make 6.8 rifles there will be ammo available. You won't find 7-08 or 308 atm

SAMMI specs for the 6.8W are 2.755 min - 2.955 max, both 270 and 300 WSM was like 2.860 and the M7 was chambered in those using a 20" or 22" magnum contour barrels so it should work.

I bought a stripped magnum Model 7 bolt off CDDN, picking up the Lawton Magnum extractor kit, the stealth bottom metal from PTG, a 3 round WSM AIC GA Precision mag and a new old/stock thumbhole stock from gun-parts, I'm either going to use the parts from the .308 bolt or source factory parts from the internet to complete the bolt, I think I will need to have the rails modified on the receiver.

I'm completing a remage M700 build now in the same caliber as well.
