Healthcare is a service industry. We are here to provide a service to the patient and to help them with thier care. People forget that. Specialists have a lot of education and training to get good at what they do, but that doesn't change the fact that it's all a service for you. Especially with an elective surgery. You have the right to go where you wish (your insurance could limit your choices or way of referral, so check your policy).

I'm a PT in Nebraska. It seems like there are some regional differences in which procedure is used more commonly. I'd recommend finding a surgeon that is proficient in the approach they use first and foremost, and have a conversation with them about the activities you want to do with that hip in the future. I'd rather have someone that does a posterior really well than someone who does an anterior but only at a mediocre level. (Or vice versa) Typically I'd say talk to some therapists and see what thier recommendation is...we see how the patients turn out and how they do functionally after surgery. However, rehab isn't always prescribed after a THA, so that might not be as helpful. Talking to a vendor will tell you who is doing a lot of THA's in the area, but I wouldn't go off of strictly who does the most. In our region that would get you to the surgeon that has been in the area longer, rather than the surgeon that does the job better.

With respect to riding MX, he said the suspension definitely helps with the hip. Its the constant pounding of running that is really bad for a hip. Suspension smooths out the abrupt jarring that hurts the hip, according to the Doc.

Surprising to hear mixed reviews on Spangehl. I could see that maybe someone might not like his bedside manner, but as for the surgery it was fantastic. People are always shocked to hear and learn I've had hip replacement.
I didn't think about the suspension on bikes, versus no suspension on skis and pounding of running. I agree with you. Some of the negative reviews were bedside manner it seemed like. Thanks Bill
