How early is too early?

Getting a late jump in setting up a Fly-in, DIY hunt into Brooks this season. As a result of that, my options for dates the air charter is available are quite slim. The best option I’ve got currently is an August 2nd drop off, a full 8 days prior to the season opener.

Folks who have experience spending time scouting for sheep before the opener, does this seem a bit absurd? I think I could pretty easily muster about 10 days of hunting once the season opens which would end up with a 17 day hunt.

Too early.

I can be horrible to sit on rams for several days.

In 2016 (Bighorns- Alberta), I sat on a herd of 13 rams for 4 days prior to opener. In the opening morning darkness I hiked to the peak overlooking the basin where the rams had bedded the evening prior. The fog had rolled in and there was no visibility, so I waited patiently for the fog to burn off.

30 minutes later a shot rang out below me. Another party of hunters had wandered in that morning and bumped the rams, shooting the one legal ram out of the 13.

That one stung.
