How is your LR rifle at short range o_O

I am bored as everyone is raiding toilet paper in the local supermarkets...

so here is a question for you guys!

I get it a LR rifle is great as you are perched on a hill top, edge of clearing etc.

but during mid day when lets say you want to still hunt those treed areas, how do you feel about lugging that 10lb rifle around quietly, then finding a deer in your high magnification scope and taking a shot at said deer 50-80 yards away...

experience and general thoughts welcome :) any issues encountered?

10lbs? Lol! Mine are 12# and 16#. I have no concerns with a quick, close range shot with the 12# 30 Nosler. The 16# RUM with big Burris on it may not be so fun in a quick, close range situation. I honestly don't mind packing either

You don't need a 10 lb rifle to shoot long range. Most of mine are weighing in at 8.5 to 10. You don't need to have a high power scope and if you do there are some 6x and 8x variables on the market. Nightforce NXS and NX8 and ATACR come to mind.

I'm completely comfortable shooting my rifles at 50-100 yards offhand. Holding a 10 lber isnt fun but doable with practice. Balance is much more important than total weight.

Bullet selection on something that will do well at LR and close range is what you should be worried about. However its not that hard to use a partition at close ranges as your POI will likely not be that much different. at 100 I wouldn't even be concerned if the POI was 1" down and 1" right. No biggie.

My long range 300 is 8.75 lbs. I’ve got a March 2.5-25 on it. I had zero issues still hunting the timber this year for elk. I leave the scope at 2.5x while in the timber. I zero at 100. Once out of the timber I dial for 250 and put the scope on 5x-6x.

My 7 lb 6 oz Sako shot a 2.25” inch group at 500 yards on Tuesday. Once the rains dies down it’s going out to verify dope at 600 all the way to 1,200 yard shots.

Lightweight and long range is my go to. That way my short range shots and free standing shots feel really good. I don’t hunt with anything over 8 lbs anymore.

No problems at all...Grew up doing deer drives and wing shooting so the basics are built in for getting the gun up quick and on target. My gun fits me well and even at high magnifications (12X) I have 0 issues picking up running game inside 100 yards through most timber. I also make it a point to practice getting shots of in 30ish seconds (which realistically is a long time if you are already some what set up.. That is off hand or all the way to getting the pack off laying down and shooting. Once shots get out to 500yds and out ill give my self a little over a minute.

Obviously in a hunting situation I'll take the time needed to ensure I'm steady and will take the time the animal gives me. But the practice has paid off as I've killed a few bucks that 99% of people never would have got a shot off on because the mess around too much and never practice except for at a bench or laying down.

Shoot with both eyes open. I never have had any trouble finding game in my scope and delivering the shots, even up close. All of the below were shot with my scopes set on 15-18x.

This one was taken about a half mile back into tree cover, no opening bigger than 35 yards. The rifle as pictured is 17.6lbs, 6mm creed.

Two years earlier, 17lbs and change on a 20” Grendel built for long range competition. 28 yards, taken from the same stand location.

Is that SFP? I'm not familiar with any of their reticles. Too rich for my blood lol

I cant believe how heavy those rifles are! I am assuming you are not hiking too far with that weight?

great tip with both eyes open!

Not too far, but slung, it’s not really an issue. It’s not uncommon to walk 2-3 miles per day with the rifle at PRS matches, sometimes farther. I’ve hiked a lot farther with them in prep for some matches with a physical component. The spot pictured above is a bit over half mile walk, so hunting with it is the shorter use for me.

I always wonder if guys lugging 12 pounders with 6x80 scopes and all the long stuff get bummed taking game at 50 yards.

I spotted a couple bucks at 400 yards. Wind was blowing 30+ and it was snowing. I backed out and came over the top and killed one @40ish yards. I wasn't disappointed I killed it. I was disappointed I didn't have my bow. And my scope was only a 5-25X56 ;)

I only ever had one issue/missed opportunity...Was with the rifle shown in my profile pic - tikka ctr w/ ATACR 4-16X....Had it on 16x, crested a ridge to setup and look below and jumped a 340" class bull at 25 yards - pulled up and couldn't find him. reached up turned down the scope to 4x and he took off full sprint. Had it been on 4x originally - he would be on my wall.
