Not sure if it's mentioned or not but either buy a 40lb bag if pellets for apellet stove or 50lb bag of animal bedding pellets less then $10 a bag.

I pack my gear into my bag and put a 25 pound plate in the straps against the back of my kuiu bag. I try to plan my training at different times and places, and find reasons to stop and use my gear. In addition to conditioning it gets me familiar with the bag and how I pack my gear, and identifies issues with access to items I may need/use more than I anticipate.

Jerry can of H2O...if I have a injury during training I can dump the water and hobble home with a few kilo's to worry about rather than a full pack weight.

I keep firewood and a luggage scale in the bed of my truck with my pack. I can easily add or subtract weight. I simply shop vac my bag out when it’s close to hunting season.

I use 25 lb bags of rice and add nalgenes filled with water for weight in between. Feels very much like a load of elk meat when done. The rice is very well bagged and holds in my training pack very well. I start lighter in spring approaching full pack weight by end of summer. Steep downhills I drop the water.

I mount steel plates up high on the frame. Up to 45#(1-25# and 2-10#) in a molle radio pouch attached up high on the frame and if I need more it just gets strapped on with a cargo net or my MR load sling.

^X-Curve with radio pouch^

I leave that on when I put the bag on for small-mid sized items that are heavy....keep the weight of those items up high.
I do the same!

I need to start doing this with sand. I’ve been training with just my packing list but I want to build my self up more.

I've used 5-10# bags of mortar, wrapped them in duct tape for longevity, and stuffed old towels in the bottom of the bag to raise the weights. This allows me to quickly adjust weights as needed.

With a full-sized bag to ruck with, I use sand dumped into a pair of contractor bags and duct taped up. No leaks, nice and secure, and mimics how meat carries pretty well. If I'm filling up a smaller bag to wear on runs or during calesthenics, I use bullets. 30lbs of 0.357 158gr cast bullets fit into a pretty small package. I'm able to get 30lbs into a 8L hydration pack, and still have enough room to pack padding and a small water bottle in to keep everything snug and not-floppy.

I put these together this weekend.

2-30# and 1-60#. I used tube sand bags.

Should allow combinations of 30-60-90-120# in my pack.

I got a 50lb and a 80lb of concrete. I put them in king sized pillow cases and then zip tied them shut. They are tight and the bags keep them from spilling. The pillow cases aren’t abrasive either.

Why not carry your actual packing list? I’ll never understand the point of carrying heavy shit for the sake of carrying heavy shit.
I've wondered about this too as I am just doing my first Western hunt this year and have started training. My worry is mainly towards my down items such as puffy clothes and sleeping bag. I don't want to constantly have them compressed for an extended period of time and risk damage to the down or internal baffles etc.
