How to fix gouge in nubuck leather?

I have a pair of lowa tibets that made an unfortunate scrape against some lava rock on the top. The incident left a few chunks of nubuck missing and in the interest of preservation I'm wondering if there is a way to fix/fill the gouges at all? They're only a few millimeters wide and maybe .5 millimeters deep, but I'm not sure if long term that will effect the leather around them or lead to leaks. I just don't want to lose an expensive pair of boots prematurely. Any advice would be appreciated!

It seems to me that you can do this in several ways.
The easiest one is to insert a piece of material about a millimeter thick (a thin piece of plastic) that you want to align into the hole.
Then close the hole at both ends with a suitable adhesive.
I prefer to use shoe glue, as it sits very tightly in place and will not come off.
