Hey friends. I have a potential private land opportunity for next rifle season in Unit 4, East of Coeur d’ Alene. In looking at the success rates, I see that in 2018, for Elk, the success rate in Unit 4 for “any weapon” was 12%.

The private land I am hunting, I still need more information from the owner (cousin of a good friend). This year (2019) for zone 4, two non-resident hunters applied in the first drawing and both were given tags. In the 2nd drawing, one out of state hunter applied and was given a tag.

Odds of getting a tag look good, wondering if it’s worth adding this trip to my hunts next year? Any local advice would be greatly appreciated. For what it’s worth, his cousin shot an awesome bull on their property this season and has shot some nice bulls in the past. That’s all I know so far unfortunately.

I haven't hunted that area, but know it fairly well as my family was from the Kellogg/Wallace area. You're looking at steep, deep, and possible bear activity. The 12% success rate likely corelates to the heavily forested areas and steep terrain. Best of luck.

Thanks for the reply. I have read on some Idaho hunting forums that it is THICK trees and very steep terrain. Lots and lots of hunters and they said not to be surprised if you hike in 6 or 7 miles and get set up just to have an ATV blow by you with the passenger sitting with an arrow knocked lol.

The biggest reason I’m considering is the private land opportunity. Also, it’s an easy drive up from Northern California with a place to stay.

I have family up in the Kellogg area as well. I’ve hunted deer/spring bear in there several times in the last few years. It’s definitely steep and thick but there are some good clear cuts and a lot of elk. If you have a private land/lodging and some local knowledge to go with it I’d go for it, sounds like a great opportunity.

lots and lots of hunters up the cda river. good luck. There are elk there, but I would not assume private land, hunter success goes up. I live and hunt the unit next door.

That is an OTC tag too....you don't need to draw, you need to hustle.

Unless you have 1000 plus acres of private prime habitat or some outrageous food to draw elk in, I'd be skeptical. Expect to see lots of other rigs and a few other hunters.

Like Ross, I have hunted there all my life. The wolves have had a dramatic impact. Steep and brushy with much lower elk numbers. But there are still good bulls around.

I don't understand your draw questions. I thought it was OTC?

I think he is talking about a controlled antlerless hunt on or within 1mi of ag land.
