Idaho Unit 1 Question

My October hunt plans kinda went to hell in a hand basket, but if might be able to get out for a mid November hunt in unit 1. Just curious as to what it’s like or what I should expect. I guess my two questions are: are there deer in the unit and will it be super crowded being the only general hunt unit open at the time? Thanks in advance!

Where are you located? I assume you are going to be targeting mule deer?

Michigan, I would prefer a mule deer as I’ve never gotten one before but a whitetail would be great too.

I hunt unit 1 every year. I have shot both mule deer and whitetail up there. My advice would be to look at some of the more southern wilderness areas open until November 18th. Unit 1 is unbelievable country...the higher stuff opens up a little but will be tough to access into November. Very thick and steep...brushy goat country. And no...not many people in general.

Unit 1 offers something great and unique but you will see a lot trees and climb to your hearts content seeing few hunters and few deer there are much better choices south....but the coloration and mass is exceptional....a few antlers from unit 1 over 40 yrs🤙

I was thinking of camping around priest lake and going from there. I know it’s more whitetail country but that’s okay.

also, how worried should I be about grizzlies in the area?

Both areas hold grizzlies my buddies trail cams up priest a few years back showed many venturing by so be aware of them in both places....as You get closer to Canada you likely have a greater chance of an encounter

I have seen one grizzly up there this last summer but that was the only one. Lots of black bears...both the cabinets and selkirks hold bucks. Im still going to say that units 19 or 20 might be a better hunt for you if youre wanting to chase muleys.

I looked at those 2, but aren’t they pretty brutal in terms of terrain and just getting to the units?

Yes...and that is what makes that hunt so special...it can be pretty brutal.

With the storm we're getting now, you will be hard pressed to get far from the highway. Ive seen groups of great bucks there.....but it's a rarity. The priest area is truly worth seeing....but you shouldn't plan on seeing a ton of mature mule deer.
